    School Clinics

The clinic near Gosta Green was in Sheep Street just round the corner from Gem Street. I too went there for 'sun-ray' treatment, ultra-violet lamp in one room as previously described and then into another room for infra-red treatment! I later spent many times there having my teeth filled, it...

We Don't Just Lose The Old Cinemas

Anyone. Is it true ODEON stood for 'Oscar Deutch Entertains Our Nation' and that the chain started in Birmingham or is that another of the 'urban myths' we keep hearing about?

Beaufort Cinema Ward End / Washwood Heath

Nice description Chris B and great photo's, bring back lots of memories. It was a superb building/cinema, what progress we have made knocking down such a wonderful structure and building the monstrosity that is there now! A bit like the 'progress' we have made in 'town'!! These things can only...

    Newhall Street

Second City House was built next to Rutland House[currently having a major facelift] when I was Caretaker there in the 70s and into the 80s. At one stage I was also looking after Second City House when it housed HM Customs & Excise and 1 Cornwall Street prior to it's redevelopment. Second City...

Clarendon Pub in Temple Street - 1963

Hi everyone, I seem to remember, if it is indeed Temple Street and not Temple Row, that the pub on the left almost at the top of the hill was 'The Nelson' so 'Admiral' was quite close! Bill.

    What is this building?

The entrance, and the building, look remarkably similar to the ex, stables that the Birmingham Dairy Co Ltd had in Old Cross Street. Could the use have been something similar, possibly to do with the Moor Street Goods Depot?

    Where is This? 110

Richie, quite correct it is the A41 which used to go from London to Birkenhead, so the next town after Birmingham would be Wolverhampton, therefore signposted when you reach Birmingham. We tend to forget that with Birmingham Councils continuing obsession with trying to prevent the car travelling...

    Picture identification

Am I mistaken or is there a 'slip road' showing the other side of the bridge? There is one to Maxtoke Lane in about the right position on the map.

    Picture identification

Rupert, have just checked the map, between Walsh Lane and Fillongley Road the A45 runs almost East/West! But given the photo' has obviously been taken very late/very early in the year, it might work with the shadows!

    Picture identification

Just a thought, the M45[the once busy but now largely forgotten motorway] was only 2 lane! Rupert, I didn't spot that the photo' must have been taken from a bridge, good job I didn't get a job as a detective!!

    Picture identification

Observations; Presumably running North/South or South/North given that the late afternoon or early morning shadows are at right angles to the road. Given the lack of, and age, of the vehicles I would think it pre-dates the motorways, including the lack of hard shoulder. Interestingly there are...

Anyone with Irish relatives who fought for Britain in WW1 ?

As Ireland was part of Great Britain in 1914 with the problems of landowners, English and Irish clearing the crofters off their land along with the similar problem in Scotland. The question should be why wouldn't they! But as hinted at by others there was so much poverty because of the above it...

    Save Our Pubs

First we ALL need to use the pubs, it's no good expecting them to be there if they are not being used. Second we need to encourage long termism in business instead of the current short term approach of making a 'fast buck' whithout looking at the damage done to communities by losing what...

    I've Finally Weakened Its Arrived

I couldn't wait! I was on holiday for my 60th. My bus pass was waiting for me when I got home just remember you can use it on trains in the Centro area and the Metro and when you're on holiday, in this country, too! They're National now. I have also bought a Senior Railcard for £24.00 at least a...

    The Bull

Nice photo Bob S. Mossy, the gunmakers is still open but only a shadow of its former self, a bit run down, no real ale ["no demand for it" says the current landlord, Sam!] I had my 50th Birthaday there and had a cracking night. Keith and Pauline were there then, sadly I heard thet Keith died a...
