Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Carolina, quite correct Martin Hone developed and opened 'The Engine House' at Tardebigge. It was, as the name suggests the old canal engine house to pump water back up to the top of the locks to conserve water in the reservoirs. :fat:

The White Swan, which became a Berni Inn in the 70's, has sadly gone although the building still exists as part of 'Innovation House', an office complex. Of course further down Edmund Street is the 'Old Contemptibles' named after the British Expeditionary Force from the 1st World War when the...

Yes also interesting as the site beind the fence on the left would become the site of 'Rutland House' which opened in 1958. Was the site left empty for 60/70 years or was something built only to be demolished prematurely, anyone know?

Great photo, but I believe I have seen an original which states it is taken from Edmund Street. this would tie-in as the Red Lion is visible towards the bottom at the juction with what was probably Bread Street which became Cornwall Street.

    Clifton Road Aston

Judy, It was Court 27, left hand side back of 163 and right hand side back of 161 my Dad, Henry John Chinn, was born in 1914 at '3 back of 161' from memory, certainly one of the 'back' houses. I'll have to check his birth certificate again, he was a twin and sadly his brother William Percy died...

    Clifton Road Aston

Spot the deliberate mistake!! My Gt. Grandad and then my Grandad and Dad lived in the house adjacent to the houses in Gothic Terrace at No 159 Clifton Road so the right hand side of their house and garden wall would have formed the back of the houses on the left hand side of Gothic Terrace. My...

Central Grammar, International School Tile Cross

Hate to butt in here, but I always remembered Central Grammer School as being in Belchers Lane Alum Rock, just up the road from what was the Pelham Arms and certainly remember playing rugby against them there on their extensive sports ground at the rear of the school.

    The Waterloo, Smethwick

Hopefully with the new planning guidelines they will have difficulty getting a change of use for the building. Time to start lobbying the local Council.

    Curzon Street Railway Station

Perhaps if we had continued to use ALL of the railway resources at our disposal, instead of the old rivalries between the companies and then regions IE GWR(Western Region/LMS(London Midland) causing massive closures of the GWR route, we would still have four tracks to and from Birmingham to and...

A few comments regarding the last few posts. Lloyd, I remember those rubber blocks in the Minories too, when I had my Lambretta Motor Scooter, they had a tendency to slide in the wet on any road, going through the Minories in the wet was potentially lethal. I was at Crich Tram Museum last...

Some old pictures of Birmingham canals

I'm guessing late seventies as the 'new' ATV studios in Bridge St. are in the background of the photo!

    Electric Milk Floats

Definitely don't write off the electric float. TNT couriers have been using a large box van delivering around the City Centre for the last couple of years and Iron Mountain were encouraged, by us at KPMG, to deliver our files using an electric vehicle, which they do, extremely cost-effectively.

    Mildred Berry Secretarial School

I remember the Mildred Berry Secretarial Scool in Cannon Street, the building is still there and was opposite the 'Parisien', where they used to queue up to go in when it first opened, we used to go to Bogarts at the top of New Street which was much better and didn;t require queuing up for! The...
