    Summer Lane

One cannot look at these pictures of Summer Lane without feeling how sad it was that so much B'ham character was lost by the 'redevelopment'. I travelled along Summer Lane daily from the Ambulance Stn in Henrietta St, and the area now doesn't hold a candle to how it was.

    St Barnabas Church Erdington

That's frightening! I used to see this church every weekend when my mother took us to Erdington where my Nan worked in the original Boots the Chemist. What a mess! I can't see this being preserved by any civic society in the future. What was wrong in normal, solid, basic carpentry and roofing?

    Castle Vale

SNOWY ? ... There was a young lad who was a ? Milkman ? off the Vale ... is that you? If so, how does the name Knoxy McKay sound to you? Pete R ... (750 Norton - The Albatross, Monday nights with Maggie McKay).

    The grange, aldridge

I have a couple of friends who lived/grew up around Aldridge in the 40s onwards. They both refer to the present Aldridge Court as 'The Grange' as a local name for this building. They are both Horsey types, and the building was the ,then, home of a rich family of some renown, the name of which...

    Bowens

BOWENS. Yes, this is front page news in the Tamworth HERALD Newspaper this week. 133 jobs lost locally. The true integrity of the staff however, has been shown in that, despite not having been paid for some time, drivers are working for free to honour contracts with the public. Again ... the...

    Clock Garage. Castle Bromwich

Another bit of my personal history gone. Both the SAAB Garage & the Clock were landmarks. I was nearly in tears last week when I went to Cofton Hackett along the Bristol Rd, so many changes...........

    Southalls factory

All I can add is that in 1971/2 I had a couple of girlfriends who worked at "Sarfhauls" (as they called it), and I used to pick them up on my 'bike occasionally. Hannah and ? .... I'm getting old. Once more, another piece of social history disappears.

    World War 1-Zeppelins over Birmingham

Back in the 80s, I was on attachment to All Saints Hospital, psychogeriatric unit. We had an elderly lady, possibly 80 years old, who never spoke, but just knitted all day long. One day, it was quiet and I was having a Coffee with the nurses, and this lady put down her knitting and spoke.. (I've...

    Queen Elizabeth Hospital

SisterSue. I have to agree with you on cleaning. When Dudley Rd were sacking their Cleaning Staff, I ALWAYS sounded the siren when passing the picket line. I'm no administrator, I speak as I find, and we found that, pre contractors, if we took a patient up to a Ward, we had to wait until a newly...

    Double Zero Club

Thanks ptrc ... Its a bit late in the year now, most of the old ****s will have laid up their bikes for the winter, (They're pensioners now!), however I'll speak to those few still around. I'm sure something could be arranged, even if it was just an informal talk on the subject to those...

    Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Hi, call me cynical if you like, but having worked in the Ambulance Service during the 80's & 90's, before I ended up leaving, (to care for dying family members), I saw a lot of Corporate Profiteering sneaking in based upon B'ham's Hospitals. Several, including the QE, were allowed to...

    Bracebridge Street

Hi - without going off subject I hope, We used to pick up an elderly Jamaican gentleman from a Tower block in Nechells. He'd come to the UK in the 50's and was housed in a house in this area (Aston Cross, etc.,). He was rehoused in the Tower block some 10 years later. He said many of his...

Chad Valley Toy Company Ltd, Harborne

Back in the 80s a Mr Hales moved into our Village. He was the (then) owner? CEO? of Chad Valley Toys. The family left after 5 years. His horse won the Grand National this year.

    Bracebridge Street

I worked out of Henrietta St Ambulance Stn, and quite often drove around this area. Having a Norton motorcycle and being interested in local history I found the photos fascinating .... but terribly sad. They show just what was lost. Communities that had grown together over decades were torn...
