    Ridley St Washington St

Janice, Ah, corner of Washington Street & Upper Gough Street - I thought that Ridley Street went straight across - my mistake! I've taken the picture out of my code and substituted the 50's map, but now need to FTP the changes onto the site. They were certainly there in September 1929 because...

    Ridley St Washington St

Janice, Thanks for those maps - so Genton's were on the corner of Washington Street and Ridley Street and had become a car park by 1969. So I must remove that image from the Genton article and hope that someone might find some earlier ones. I was too far down Washington Street, I'm afraid...

    Ridley St Washington St

Hi PapaPedro, Welcome to the Forum. Kelly's Directory has then as being their in 1933 and the business had ceased by the end of WW2. So I can't be 100% sure that those were the buildings that they actually occupied. I had a walk around there around 2000, but there was no evidence at that time...

    Asylum Road

Yes, Mike, I copied it into Wordpad then added the extension. Xenforo doesn't let you add bits to a link, but you did it just the same. Maurice

    Ridley St Washington St

The only pic of Washington Street that I have is all commercial buildings about 20 years ago, originally the Syren Works of ships' lamp manufacturer Alfred F. Genton & Son Ltd. The full story of the Compnay can be found on my website here:- https://mscrete.com/genton.htm Maurice

I'd be more worried about the haircut, Enel, I keep putting that off because I have always hated having my haircut, but it will be long enough for a pightail soon ! :) Maurice

    Asylum Road

Thanks for that, John, though as you say, probably not too accurate, and as we know, knock a few buildings down and you can alter road layouts quite significantly. And it is almost 170 years since the building was demolished. Maurice

    Grafton road B11

Optrists, I've failed to find any using the search engine and taking a virtual stroll using Google StreetView, it all now seems to be fairly modern commercial premises. I guess any photos will be as rare as hens' teeth and likely to be in private hands. It seems that a couple of other people...

    127 Bristol Road

It looks as if he was born in Vienne, about 8 miles south of Lyon. We stayed there in 2014 for a week and it is home to quite a nice little jazz festival. I even bought a storm jacket there and still use it to this day. :) Maurice

    127 Bristol Road

The only thing I can find on FMP is a hospital admission record for a J. de Serionne who was an interpreter for the Royal West Kent Regiment, but no mention of a Birmingham connection. Date of birth of 1892, so possibly the same man, and was transferred from No 9 Cav. Field Ambulance to number...

    127 Bristol Road

An address search for 127 Bristol Road on the 1911 Census shows that no such property exists. Odd numbers jump from 123 (a manufacturers' clerk & family) to 129 (a widow with no occupation) and even numbers jump from 126 to 128 as expected. Nor does the number appear in the index of houses on...

Great Charles Street Queensway car stunt

Some people drive like that all the time, BB :) I left Brum in 1961 and the first time I drove back was about 1990 on a business trip to Aston Uni. Of course, all the road system had totally changed but I knew where I wanted to get to and could see it, but couldn't get at it. In desperation I...

    Gedge

I can find no trace of Dorothy's death in England & Wales and I've now checked right up until last year when she would have beed 106 years old! We have no reason to suggest that she would have died in Scotland or Northern Ireland, so it is most likely she died in North America, possibly Canada...

    Gedge

Ruud, Edward appears to have had an older brother, George August GEDGE born in 1908, but does not appear to have had any children from either of his two marriages to Enese R. SLAUGHTER in 1936 at Hove or to Grace LAU in 1980 at Brighton. There were no other children of Edward & Dora GEDGE née...
