    Good classical music on YouTube

Now for some easy listening for a Sunday evening. First the Overture to Johann Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus. Now, if you remember the old black & white comedy The Ladykillers with Alec Guiness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom & Jack Warner, you might recall that it centres around a gang of...

Janice, I presume you're referring to Rose (Leah) Arnold? She was born before they were married so I guess that George had Rose from a previous relationship (married or otherwise) and the mother's maiden name was Smith. Maurice

Not having much joy with an Erdington connection. In 1881 they were living at 53 Henry Street, which is in the parish of St Matthew, and neither parent appears to have been christened according to familysearch.org Furthermore, in 1911, the family were still living in Lord Street, albeit at a...

Janice, Artie Shaw, the American bandleader, had Russian parents and his real name was Arthur Shawsky. But I deviate...... Back to my John & Leah (nee Wright), on the 1920 Electoral roll Leah Shaw is living with either her sister or her mother, Elizabeth Wright, at 15 Bright Terrace, Guildford...

I've drawn a complete blank on Shaw 33887(& variants) Kings Royal Rifle Corps on both FindMyPast and Ancestry other than that Soldiers Effect Record. He appears on CWGC on Tyne Cot Memorial, but seemingly nowhere else & with no details of home location or family. Maurice

Nick, He certainly must have a link to Erdington somewhere and at the moment I can't see that. With St Barnabus Church Records current out of reach in the Archives (banns/marriages/christenings/administrative records?), it is likely to be difficult to find that link. I have both Ancestry &...

Absent Voters List is also on Ancestry and there is a Private Sydney John Shaw of 19 Ryland Road Erdington, Service No. S/361904, GHQ, ASC listed, but also a death for that name in Birmingham in 1969 which may or may not be the same guy. Maurice

Nick, I've attached the 1911 Census, but I've tried to carry it forward without success. Leah does not appear on the 1939 Register, nor does she appear to have been been pregnant around that period as there are no suitable SHAW children with a mother's maiden name of WRIGHT around the time of...

Janice, That was my initial thinking too in post #36, but there's no marriage to Clara and I hadn't got as far as checking Henry, but if the deaths are correct, I think that you have sussed it. Maurice

John, Nice arrangement for 1929, and the vocal is quite coy. Difficult to dislike it as you just want to laugh along with her. Maurice

    who likes 1920 and 30s 40s music

John, Yes, I was aware of the Whiteman orchestration. I don't rate the Billy Merrin track, especially the vocal, but the Roy Fox track is his usual polished performance and the vocal quite acceptable. Both recorded in the same year and such an amazing difference. Does the name Lou Simmons mean...

Finally, this is another one like the Litolf Scherzo, in that it doesn't get played very often nowadays. It's Christian Sindings' Rustle of Spring and at least the pianist looks happy. Maurice

Good music to listen to on U Tube

Couldn't resist plonking this one in here:- A young boy had just attended his first lesson to learn the tuba. His dad asked, "What did you learn?" The boy replied "I learned how to play a C." The next week his dad asked again, "What did you learn this week?" "I learned \how to play a G."...

    Death certificate.

I've just been through all the Drinkwaters in Worcestershire on the 1911 Census and none of them really fit. But to be missing off a census is nothing new and being most probably a farm labourer, they don't always get added by the farm owner. Nor can I find James in the military records on FMP...
