    who likes 1920 and 30s 40s music

Lynn, i'm tempted to say, so I will, that he could have done a lot more with Summertime than he did. But that is Bechet with his obsession with those long quivering notes. They do get boring after a bit and he wasn't short on technique. So my report is "cold try harder". :) Maurice

    who likes 1920 and 30s 40s music

Thanks, John, though it really doesn't come alive for me until the last chorus. The Alberts reminds me of my Dad trying to play the piano just after the war, all the right notes but in the wrong places! Maurice

John, Thanks for that. Eric Gibson and I can now see the entrance that led to our grandmother's houses in what used to be called Barton's Place way back when the houses were built. We were more often known as back of 15. Cheers. Maurice

Good music to listen to on U Tube

Ha ha, Bazz, there's about 200 miles of sea between us and Hydra, and I've no idea when Crete first got electricity, though I have photographs taken here in 1930 and there are street lamps, and the only gas on Crete is the bottled variety. So I assume it was before 1930. I don't know when...

Virus’s and immunisation in the past

Same here. Janice, in 1962. As my wife had had it as an infant, I had to have it before the first of our children was born and each of our four children had it shortly after birth. Maurice

    Covid vaccination process

Dave, I should have had an appointment last week, but after all the EU vaccine fracas it has now done deadly quiet. < Twiddle thumbs > Maurice

    Townies

No, Pete, and never had flowers in my hair or visited San Francisco, but perhaps you are referring to a certain photo that I posted somewhere, but just to wind you up, here it is again! :) Maurice

MWS, Find My Past also displays mmn back into the mid 1860s, though there might me one or two holes - or maybe more illegitimate births! :) Maurice

John, That's an excellent piece of work. One which appears to be missing is the Traveller's Rest on the corner of Bartons Bank and Whitehead Road and there is a picture in post #11 here:-...

    Townies

Was this a peculiarly Birmingham or big city thing? I was in business in Bournemouth & Poole during this period and I can't remember any such group activity. The Teddy boy era was over pretty quickly and then for a year or so, being a seaside town, we had the mods -v- rockers gatherings. But...

    House Auctions

Alison, The house was sold on 30 June 2006 for £139,950, but a Land Registry search (not free) would tell you more perhaps. The original auction was listed in the Sandwell Evening Mail 18 December 1987 as LOT 2, but no other entries for this address. Maurice

One other thing I forgot to mention, the street is spread over two piece numbers and although it is the same street, one is spelt Brearley and the other Brearly. FMP brought them both up as the same street, which they are, but that's not to say that Ancestry will act in the same way when the...

Mr Zippy, I've just had a look at Brearley Street by address, but there are over 67 Courts, each with many houses, and a total of 447 addresses in what seems like not a very logical order. Needless to say I gave up as the lowest number I came across was 68. Maurice

    Witton Cemetery Sections1 and 5

Janice, Apparently Catholics officially relaxed the rules in 1962, though it seems it was mostly ignored before that date in recent years. Whereas the restriction in the Church of England was only completely done away with as recent as 2016. But, of course, this applied to churchyards rather...

You certainly can on FindMyPast, not sure about Ancestry. On FMP go to the Census pape, select the Census you want from "All Record Sets" (top right), and the page will come up with the option to select by Persons or by Address. Hope that helps. Maurice

    Gas Street Preservation Society

No doubt, Mike, but I did warn him. :) But not as bad as Bournemouth Courts when I tried to obtain a copy of divorce papers for my daughter - they arrived over two years later after she had passed away - and that was before the pandemic. Maurice

Virus’s and immunisation in the past

Yes, I well remember the fainting new recruits, Phil, and that merely upset several others in the queue. Ha ha, they had yet to do the gas training :) But needle technology has much improved today and no one should fear dental procedures due to a needle these days, and most dentists use a...

    Gas Street Preservation Society

Birmingham Archives Catalog here:- http://calmview.birmingham.gov.uk/CalmView/Advanced.aspx currently holds references to only 20% of their Archives. It doesn't find "Gas, Street Preservation Society", but has over 200 pages of items if you insert "Gas Street", and 27 pages if you insert...

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

Banks are very impersonal these days and if they can't sell you something, you're just a nuisance on an otherwise peaceful day. Gone are the days when working for a bank was a job for life, and the staff were well qualified to answer your questions. Nowadays, if they can get you over the...
