    The cane at school

Yes, this was at Stanley House School on Bristol Road. For slight wrongdoings you were sent to the Head. He would bend you over and whack you with a rubber gym shoe. He would then hug you and say, "And now we will be good friends." I've often wondered if he got some 'kicks' out of these...

    The cane at school

At primary school back in the very old days, I upset the latin master, a florid faced man with an evil streak. One warm and sunny afternoon while he was slashing at the black board with a piece of chalk, laying out the Imperfect tense of the verb Amo, my friend Stephen sitting behind me, tapped...

    The cane at school

I remember him well. He was a fearsome character, but also kind, as you have mentioned. He took me to Selly Oak Hospital after I had received a sports injury.

    Birmingham Hippodrome

Ernie Clapham, was a great friend of our family. He was stage manager in the 50's up until he retired in the late 60's. Was your dad Harry Brown?

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

My mom used to take me to the Barn when I was about 9. I always had egg and chips followed by butterscotch I've cream. Happy Days.

    Doctors

I remember Dr. Wand. I'm 67 now and I think it was 'old' Dr. Wand I used to see. I lived on Bristol Road opposite Wrensons (corner of Wellington Road) and remember going to Dr. Wands office which he had on the corner of Bristol Road and Balsall Heath Road.I remember walking to his office and...

    Saturday jobs

I have no idea. My day started at 7:00am. I did often wonder at the types of people that spent their evenings there. During the summer I worked at the Midland full time. I enjoyed it as there were some good people there.

    Advertising in the past

I remember Findlays tobacco shop on Colmore Row. In 1968 I smoked a pipe also and used to buy Scotch mixture from them. Behind the counter had dozens of Blue? jars in with the various tobacco mixtures. I suppose it's gone now.

    Saturday jobs

In 1968 I worked as a house porter at the Midland Hotel. I polished brass everywhere and vacuumed half a mile of corridor carpet (yes I actually paced it out one day). In addition to that I had to vacuum the downstairs Neptune Lounge and sweep the staff spiral staircase that ran from the lower...

    Ex Pats and Brummies abroad

For the past 11 years we have lived in Highlands, North Carolina. Previous to that we lived/worked for 22 years in in Atlanta, Georgia. We moved from Harborne to the US in 1986, so that my (US born) wife could spend the last few months with her father who was dying from prostate cancer. We have...

    George Dixons Grammar School

Some good and some bad memories of my time, 1964-1969 at GD. I'm afraid I wasn't a very good pupil and had a rather laissez-faire attitude towards my education. After the 1st year at City Road, years 2 and 3 were spent at Five Ways. I liked Five Ways and found my time there more enjoyable that...
