    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Hi Walsallie, I remember that little cafe near the railway station, when I was at Aston Commercial we used to go to Holford Drive (I think) for sports and on the way home we used to visit that little cafe for our weekly Vimto. It was very dingy inside but we loved our Vimto. Never heard anyone...

    Aston Road North

In my opinion the photo looks more like the 1950s than 1937. The cinema Astonian called the Adelphi was actually the Astoria before it became the ATV Studios. On the corner of Aston Road and Sutton Street was Thompsons a large greengrocer, almost diagonally across from St. Mary's Church. I...

    Lichfield Street, Birmingham

The Rose & Crown was where my g.g. grandfather lived in 1845 when the number was 16 Court, 79 and a half Lichfiled Street, his name was John Raybould. I believe it was later re-numbered as 101.

Griffins Greengrocers, Mr Sparrow Newtown Row, Burlington Street

I remember Stokers in Burlington Street it was on the right hand side of the alley that led into Barton Street, they were still there into the 1960s. I don't remember the coalyard being in use in my time, but there were big double doors to a yard so I presume that was it. This was to the left...

My first visit to a library was with my mother who was an avid reader, mostly crime, this was at Albert Road, on the corner of Witton Road, it was a magniificent place having been Aston Town Hall until Aston was incorporated into Birmingham. As you entered there was a wonderful sweeping...

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

My dad always told me his grandmother wore a man's flat cap and smoked a pipe, I always thought she must have been a bit eccentric, but in Saturday's Birmingham Mail, Carl Chinn published a photo of the opening of a welfare centre in Digbeth in I think 1905, and quite a lot of the women were...

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

When I was about 13 years old I really wanted some fur backed gloves, my mother kept telling me that when they got wet they would be like drowned kittens on my hands, nevertheless, I eventually got a pair, and mom how right you were.

    Lewis's Department Store

Mr. Holly was definitely at Lewis'. No one has mentioned the lovely Christmas scenes that were in all the windows on the ground floor, even if you were not going to see Father Christmas they were wonderful to see.

Shops on High Street in the City.

Hi Maria, I confirm there was a children's hairdressing department at the Co-op, High Street, my son (now aged 56) had his first haircut there and I have a certificate they gave me, he was really naughty wriggling about and it took about 3 girls to quieten him down I was so embarassed.

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

When things were hard to get during and just after the war years, we used to make paper chains I can't remember if we did this at school, but we certainly did at home spending many evenings cutting up crepe paper and anything else suitable to make them.

    Refuse Collecting Vehicles

My dad always called the dustbin the miskin. I think I read an article by Carl Chinn that miskin was used by Shakespeare so it is a very old description.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

My immediate thought for the No.3 or 33 tram was the top end of Aston Road, and the No.3 tram ran from Witton into town.

Thanks Smudger that is the song so appropriate for the ad. I just had another "senior moment".

    Music like it should be

Another TV advert which I like with a lovely song which I can't recall at the moment is for an animal charity and shows a crowd of dogs and one finds its way to a house where he is welcomed with open arms.
