I worked in Bow Street at Boulton & Paul a small branch of B & P who if I remember correctly were involved in aircraft manufacture or parts - this would be in 1954 I only worked there for a few months.
Just re-reading this thread, I had a friend June Holmes who lived at No.20 so No.18 was next door, certainly not a shop, just one of a row of terraced houses, but not back to backs, they had their own back garden.
Thanks to all who kindly replied, Janice you have found the correct Thomas Kelly, wife Kate, and daughter Kate. I very much appreciate your help, and will be forwarding all the information I have found so far to his grandaughter.
I am hoping someone with access to Ancestry came help me find the war records of Thomas V. Kelly, I have found that he was in the Worcestershire Regt. No.14076 and was killed in action possibly 10th August 1917 at Ypres. He was awarded the Victory, British and
15 Star. If his Attestation...
So sad to read that Norton Motorcycles have gone into administration. I worked at the old Norton in Aston from 1954-57 I worked in the Buying Department, and really enjoyed my time there. Our offices were based at the Shelley factory in Aston
Brook Street. On Friday nights they used to hold...
I refer to Post 1042, the shuttering on the building next to Woolworth's was an opticans shop for many years. Woolworth's was built sometime after WW11, I can't remember the exact years but probably early to mid 1950s. The Burlington Restaurant was a British Restaurant opened during the war.
In the early 60s I worked at a little factory ALVIC in Park Lane, Aston, and Victor Turton used to visit in his capacity as a Rep, I don't remember what he sold or the company he worked for.
I remember Joan's Wool Shop very well, I used to knit a lot when my son was a little boy, you could have wool put away and just buy a couple of ounces at a time. Her mother used to help in the shop, and Joan had a daughter called Charmaine.
The shop on the corner was Baines bread and cake shop.
I can definitely confirm that the rear entrance of Burlington Hall was in Park Lane, I spent many years as a committed member of BH. At the time it was run by Bob? and Nellie Slack and they lived at house in Park Lane with a very tiny pavement at the front. It wasn't an entrance to the club...
I am so sorry to learn that Alf has passed away, his obituary was in the Birmingham Mail today - the first I knew the sad news.
When I first started doing my family research he was very helpful. My condolences to his family and friends. Another big loss to his Forum friends he will be sadly...
So sorry to hear the sad news of Alan's death. Like everyone on the Forum I enjoyed his posts very much, he was a mine of information. I had the good fortune to meet him a couple of times when he came to collect some Carl Chinn magazines and when he helped me when my car broke down. My...
I too would be interested in any information of photos of Sheep Street. My g.g. grandfather John Raybould ran the Dog & Duck public house at 40 Sheep Street in 1861 when he was then aged 55 years with his 2nd wife Harriet, and their 2 children
Priscilla age 6, and Agnes 3 and baby Alfred...
So very sorry to hear the news about Alan, I always enjoyed his interesting posts ranging over so many subjects and areas of Birmingham. I had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to collect some old Brum (Carl Chinn) magazines. Tess my thoughts are with you both at this very sad time.
