    Gas man

I remember the old gas men coming to empty the meter, we always had a rebate too. I dread to think how heavy the old leather bag would have been at the end of the day. Must had had strong arms. I also remember the lamp man, we had a lamp on the corner of our cul-de-sac, Copeley/Burlington...

Would steerers be the name for men who steered the barges, seems logical to me.

    Old street pics..

Lyn, many thanks for posting all these photos, we do appreciate all the time you devote to this. May I comment that I think the photo on post 61 of Woodcock street looks more like the 1950s than the 1930s as the pram looks more from the 50s era.

Only a guess but perhaps Albert Shaw was a councillor.

    Products Of The 1930s

I was amazed to see Swizzles on sale in the Co-op today, I haven't seen them for years and thought production had been discontinued.

    Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

My best friend was born on Coronation Day - 12th May 1937, she received a silver spoon, from I think one of the Bbirmingham newspapers of the time, unfortunately her mother didn't treasure it, using it as an ordinary spoon and it didn't survive. In later years her mother bitterly regretted not...

    Old street pics..

Lyn, many thanks for posting the latest batch of photos, I think one or two captions are wrong though. On post 9 showing Clifton Road, I am sure the shop Priests was on the corner of Clifton Road and Upper Sutton Street, again Post 11 I feel is Upper Sutton Street towards the junction of...

    Park Lane...Aston

Oops should have read Ray's post more carefully, so it was the Royal Albert.

    Park Lane...Aston

Alan I have to correct you re the Black Horse pub, that was much further up Park Lane between Parliament Street and Potters Hill. The other pub mentioned on the corner of Park Lane/Upper Thomas Street was a cream tiled pub but I am not sure of the name but think it was either the Royal Albert...

    Park Lane...Aston

Hi all glad to be back on the forum thanks to Jean's help. I agree with Brenda that the photo Lyn posted shows Park Lane Aston looking towards Aston Cross. On the front right of the photo is the corner of Thomas Street and that plot was bombed in the war and a small petrol station was put on...

    Perry Barr postcards

Nomad, the shoe shop you mentioned was Walford & Cashmores, I think they also had a branch in Aston Road, almost opposite the Astoria cinema, later the TV studios.

    Hare and Hounds, Kingstanding

Thanks for the correction Len, my friend Pat and her sister Valerie must be your cousins. Sadly lost touch with Pat over the years.

Re: Detectives needed Griffins Greengrocers, Mr Sparrow Newtown Row, Burlington Stree Griffin's had two shops, one run by Bill Griffin this was on the same side of the road as Blacks. The other on the corner of Burlington Street/Newtown Row was run by his brother Jack. We used these shops on...

    Lloyds garage

I remember Lloyds Garage it was almost opposite the Black Horse pub, but I have no information on the owner, I think at some time John Houghton posted a photo, have you tried the search facility? it might be still on the site although we lost a lot of pictures when we were hacked a few weeks ago.

    Alma Street, Six Ways, Aston

Sandrada, I don't think the newsagents next to the Post Office was Mitchells. As far as I know they only had two shops, one next door or very near the Orient cinema, and the other just up from the Globe cinema.

    Steelhouse lane

Mike, one of my great grandmothers was living in a cave on the 1851 census with her father and sister. The Rock Houses, at Kinver. If ever we are talking about family trees with people, Ray delights in telling them I am descended from cave dwellers.

    Gower Street

Mike, those photos bring memories back to me, when I was about 13 years old, my friend and I had crushes on a couple of lads who lived in Gower Street, and we would cut up from Furnace Lane into Gower Street hoping to "accidentally" bump into them. We hardly ever saw them, but must have spent...
