    The cane at school

    I was caned a number of times at school, mainly for talking or laughing in class. When the teacher asked what you had laughed at, most times you simply couldn't remember and that seemed to infuriate them.

    Phil, thanks for the photos, The Globe may be the wrong one, but my grandad was living there as a 14 year old on the 1891 census, and The Flower Pot Inn I will keep these for my family history.

    My grandad was born at The Holt Arms, cum Pot of Beer cum Gosta Green in 1876. Would anyone have a photo of the Vintage Tavern, 99 Digbeth. My g. grandmother's half brother Alfred Raybould is shown living there on the 1901 census.

    If we spilt salt mom would insist we threw a pinch over the shoulder otherwise it would bring bad luck. We also put a coin in a purse or handbag when we gave one as a present, and money when gave a knife or knives as a present. Is it a Brummie thing or do other areas do the same.

    Nico I have been to the Blue Lias many times it is situated looking over a canal I can't quite remember the village it is near but not far from Dunchurch. Lias is a type of soil we were told.

    Big Gee I think the machines you describe were Sumlock Calculators. I never used them myself, my sister was a comptometer operator don't know what machine she used though.
