I can remember coming home from school as a child and there was a sudden storm .i remember screaming and running home in the middle of the road .i was so scared .we used to do all the things told above and sit under the stairs till the storm passed .my mom told us she used to ride her bike home...
i remember an old lady called may who was caretaker at mary street school balsall heath in the 1950s. and a peter padgett who was caretaker at upper highgate girls school in1960s......
im going back to 1950.the little hut lay back from the road a big grass area in front of it just below the selly park school it was a sort of nursery as i was only about 4 yrs old then .the nuns taught us whatever we did in those days ....it could have been a church hall. its been a long time...
my grandmother lived in milner road ..we lived in pershore avenue for a while .thats when i went to the nursery run by the nuns....my uncle had a business on pershore road then they moved to dogpool lane they are still in business there .i dont remember a great deal but i do remember going to...
Jack hood was my grandmothers brother .he owned a pub called the bell in tanworth ..his gloves still hang behind the bar.....i believe he is buried in the small churchyard there ..
Hi angela ford ....the saxaphonist you mentioned was it john powell from andy ross and his band ,we used to dance to his music.......my favorite haunt was the west end ballroom with its sprung floor ...great live groups there ....
I remember alice ..she was a tiny little woman ...my sister used to walk mr hensons dogs.i have seen lots of pics of conybere st on this site but i dont know how to transfer them .search conybere st .see if it shows any ...if you want to send me your email address privately ill send you what ive...
i lived in conybere st in the 1950s. the only shops i remember were the old cafe on the corner of hick st later became a bookies ..hensons gen store on corner upper highgate st .and a shop run by polish couple opposite alms houses ...there was a butchers shop in upper highgate st by rear...
hi astonian ...re hollowlegs ....my uncle used to call my sister (then 7yrs old).hollowlegs .after your saying what it meant i can only assume she used to drink a lot of "pop".....ive not heard it said again until now....cheers .
A lady called mrs harris lived in conybere st and everyone bought her faggots and peas we used to take a basin and come back with 6 of her faggots and gravy and another filled with mushy peas .todays faggots arent a patch on home made ....
I was called sparrow because i had thin ankles .....my sister was called wendy fenders and my two younger sisters were called .inky pink and hollow legs ...dont ask me why .
Has anyone got any pictures of upper highgate county girls school on moseley road .i attended there with my sisters i can see every part of the school in my mind but sadly ive never been able to find any fotos of it ......
