Petrol pumps & filling stations of the past

A very interesting view, but I am surprised by the 1953 date. There is not one post war vehicle to be seen in the picture, and a complete absence of buses. My immediate thought was either 1939, or just postwar, and I wondered if the image had been in the Frith, (or whoever) stocks for the duration.

Petrol pumps & filling stations of the past

One of my mates had been to Germany in his 1960 Ford 5cwt van (!). He had a German version of the sticker in the window.

    Hybrid & electric cars

They have tried a couple of wheezes on my car to save fuel, firstly a nine speed gearbox with ninth being geared to 46mph per 1000rpm, and secondly an eco setting for the transmission which starts in second and free wheels if you take your foot off the accelerator pedal. If you are approaching a...

    Hybrid & electric cars

In the case of Richard’s 148k miler, I see the options open to him as limited only to whatever style car he thinks is best for himself. My choice of car is limited only by a liking for a nice new car every so often, and the application of a certain amount of logic which is leading me to the...

    Hybrid & electric cars

Since I now do only a small annual mileage the cost of my motoring is ruled by the depreciation of the car. My current diesel vehicle, based upon its list price and its present value according to “we buy any car” has depreciated by £25,000 in the 3 years I have had it. As I have recently clocked...

Well, how about a cheery little piece from Albert to help you along!

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Thanks. What seems strange to me is the small number of folk about. Early in the morning, or a Sunday?

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

The L plate car is an Austin A40 Somerset, the black saloon is a Morris Oxford Series MO, and the compressor lorry is a Bedford.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

I find the rapid cuts from one scene to the next very annoying. Is this a function of the equipment or just some modern fashion? I appreciate that you can pause, but there is barely even time to react before it flicks on to the next view. Horrible.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

That’s a very new Silver Shadow, about ten Ford Escorts’ worth. There must be money in office furniture, or is there a bookie’s near by?

    JOSEPH WEBB...SEWER GAS LAMPS

The gas produced is still methane, and burning it still produces carbon dioxide. Admittedly methane is a more “powerful” greenhouse gas than CO2, but the modern thinking is to cease burning any of these organic gases and burn pure hydrogen which only produces water when burned. The hydrogen is...

    Adderley Street Bus Storage Yard

If the engine and transmission have been removed, then presumably the residual value in the structure is reduced to that of the scrap metal. Recycling of seats, electrics and window frames is presumably not worth the effort since the concurrent removal from service of fleets of similar vehicles...

Can anyone identify or make any educated guesses about this gentleman?

Can anyone identify or make any educated guesses about this gentleman?

If you’ll pardon the expression, they are to hang your whistle on. When my brother and I were little ankle biters, we always wanted to blow the various police whistles that were about at my grandparents’ house, grandad was retired, but there were two of his brood in the force, and the answer...

Can anyone identify or make any educated guesses about this gentleman?

Not all railway employees received the “extra payment” of a paternalistic nature since the infrastructure was not there to provide it, in places like Stafford or Coventry, and we should not lose sight of the highly skilled nature of many of the jobs. I think that railwaymen were still in many...

Can anyone identify or make any educated guesses about this gentleman?

From my many years of reading railway histories I would suggest that railway careers did not pay well, using as an excuse for their parsimony the steadiness of the employment and the respect that railwaymen received from society in those days. Those men living in places like Swindon or Crewe...

Side parting versus centre parting. Centre partings tend to spread as you age. Mine now stretches from ear to ear.

    Good classical music on YouTube

What did anyone think of the Mozart concert on the box last night. Fantastic doesn’t half describe the orchestra and conductor, if it goes onto BBC Sounds or whatever watch/listen to it.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

#2219 The only vehicle visible is a Morris J2 van, or its Austin equivalent, which came into production in 1956, so at least we have a starting date for the picture. It seems that the “corner shop” was still operating at the time, allowing us to nip round the corner for a packet of gaspers or...
