    Tamworth field trainspotting

What happy memories this has brought back to me. Standing there in that field in the late forties early fifties, good times. Train spotters today just cannot have the pleasure we had with those magnificent steam engines.

Perry Barr Shopping Precinct 1960-9, Lynton Sq

Back in the early '60's, my wife and I would shop in the supermarket there (Was if Finefare ?) we would go with our three little girls and do a big weekly shop, including some clothes for the girls and still get change from a five pound note. Try doing that today, you wouldn't get much change...

Black Marias and Police Motor Cycles

Re: Black Maria Going back to the '70's, I then knew a police motorcyclist, and at that time they were using BSAs, big brutes, he told me that although those bikes had terrific acceleration, they had no staying power, so if they couldn't catch the villain in the first mile they had no chance.

Smudger, you are right, I am in touch with Graham in Stockton, have been for the last couple of years. Yet to get up there to meet up again. I lost touch with Graham in the early '60's after leaving the garage we both worked in. In out chats since then he tells me one of his jobs was driving ex...

    National Service

Paul, When I left 22 Coy. in June '58 (Just when staybright buttons were coming in. Bloody 'orrible stuff) they were beginning to wind the company down. I guessed it wouldn't be too long before it disbanded altogether, that's probably why they moved to Aldershot. As a point of interest, the old...

How is one issued with the N/S medal?

    National Defence Medal.

The national service medal is not official, if you want one you have to pay for it. Myself I object to this, I feel that all N/S men should be presented with one.

    Bentons

Does anyone remember BENTONS toy shop in Erdington High St. On the right hand side going away from six ways, near the old Roebuck inn I believe. An absolute cornucopia of toys, very little of which I could afford to buy, but always in there looking and wishing. On the rare occasions I had a half...

I told the tale of the bad Cpl. a little while back, now for the good one. In my locker I had a two page colour picture of Gina Lolobrigida. This corporal wanted this picture so badly, he tried all sorts of bribes to obtain it, all to no avail. However, the day before our final passing out...

During my training at Blandford we had two cpls who I'm sure played the good cop/bad cop system. But it back fired on the bad cop when some of the lads found him down town one evening, they gave him a right going over. Put him out of action for a few days.
