    Furnace lane..

Great photo Lyn! but...I'm confused about the location. Furnace Lane started at Porchester St, at least it did when I lived there. However, the map location shown is what confuses me (it doesn't take much) I feel that the photo is at Clifford St at the start of the second gulley. Dave A

    Gone out of fashion

Having to train potential machinists, toolmakers etc. I never found left hand people to be any different from righties. You are expected to be ambidextrous in the world of machining. FYI, I had my dad's M&W 1" micrometer for more than 60 years, in it's original spectacle case. BTW, specs or...

    Gone out of fashion

As an owner of an "engineering" business until my retirement 5 years ago, I had every conceivable piece of measuring equipment. Micrometers and Vernier calipers are mostly digital now and not a lot of learning is required to use them. I had a slide rule too, however, it was just a subject of...

    Newtown Row

The problem was that Newtown Row ended at Bracebridge St and then became High St. However, most of the locals, including me and my family, still referred to it as Newtown Row, mostly as 'The Row'. Dave A

    Whitehead street, Aston

I remember it well...I may wrote in previous post that the open area in the centre was where we had a cycle speedway track in the early 50's. Dave A

    Summer Lane

I know for sure that the first 2 digits are HA. I believe that all Midland Red buses were registered in Smethwick, which HA represents. On later registrations, they would have been the second digits. Like this... Dave A

    Then & Now

I agree...and I do remember it well. I also feel that B&W photos have a more authentic look, probably nonsense but that's just me. Dave A

    Summer Lane

So I gather that this view shown is towards town? I was never that familiar with Summer Lane past New John St West. I believe there were hills in both directions. Dave A

    Slum Clearance 1959

Just the term "slum" is derogatory. Yes, they were antiquated for sure, but for the most part they were inhabited by proud families that took care of them as best they could. I lived in a back to back house in Paddington St and never regarded it as living in the slums. I may be a little too...

    Slum Clearance 1959

Not sure if this has been previously posted, but I haven't seen it until now. Watching it made me a little annoyed...I felt very uncomfortable with the condescending dialogue, at least that was my take on it. No Brummie accents until the midway mark, just a heavy dose of BBC lingo among the...

Moving away but always a Brummie

When you you think that I left Brum at 16, lived in Crawley, Sussex for 10 years and emigrated to Canada 56 years ago, one might believe that my Brummie accent would have bit the dust...not so. It's still my predominant lingo and I still identify as a Brummie, which still garners much attention...

Really don't know that. In fact I did not stick around after the train arrived to see if the train went on. I had to get home to tea in Aston...BTW, the Patriot in the photo is 45531 Sir Frederick Harrison. Dave A

    RIP MAURICE (sospiri)

Never met anyone on BHF but it feels like I've lost family. Loss of friends is all too common these days and R.I.P. is becoming routine. Regardless...RIP Maurice, gonna miss your wisdom. Dave A
