A fascinating topic...sometimes I see logic in changes to words in other English speaking countries. However, using a verb to describe a noun is not one of them. The TIRE vs. TYRE is the most common example, this makes no sense to me. Dave A

These occasions have always represented an escape from reality. I don't have a problem with that, lord knows we need it. Dave A

Indeed Lyn, I was very disappointed with the closing ceremonies...way too much dancing and so called dance music. I loved the opening ceremonies, made me proud, happy to say that, for me, Ozzie saved the closer. Dave A

I respectfully disagree about the use of oriented/orientated. I have never, up to this point in my life at 82, heard orientated used on this side of the pond, or pressurized (into doing something). Not saying it doesn't get said over here, just that I have never heard it. Dave Sr.

I only hear Pressurized & Orientated when I'm watching the BBC, Mike, it really jumps out at me! Dave A

When I arrived in Canada I found the difference in use of words to be quite annoying. As far as I was concerned, English was English and everything else was wrong. I guess that sort of attitude is what leads to a stereotypical view of people from the UK. However, things quickly became normal and...

Something like American & English English...however, Quebec French is, for the most part, spelled the same as French French, but verbally very different. French people have a problem understanding Quebecois, but not the other way round. Dave A

Just watched the opening ceremonies! Made me feel proud! An excellent show and a great performance by Duran Duran, who I'm hoping to get to meet when they play in Toronto in August. My friend plays keys in the opening act CHIC, who you probably know, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Dave A

    Gone out of fashion

Sitting on my patio yesterday, I was noticing the chestnut tree that hangs over one of my fences. There are lots of "conkers" on it and I couldn't help thinking about the fact that conker season for us kids in Aston meant going down the Bristol Rd to collect them. I have no idea if there were...

    Newtown Row shops

Coincidentally, I had a "disagreement" with someone on FB about this same question. A picture of the House That Jack Built was posted, prompting a response that it was on Newtown Row. I replied that it was on High St Aston, which started at Asylum Rd, Aston Brook/Bracebridge St junction and...

    Furnace lane..

Depends on definition Lyn. As you know, we referred to Furnace Lane as the "Gulley", the first being the Porchester St end. It was never known as the first gulley, but next one up that started at Clifford St was known as the second gulley and so on ending at Gower St. Not worth arguing about...

    Furnace lane..

Thanks Mike, Lyn gave me the impression that it was at Porchester St. It's close but not enough to not confuse me. It's interesting to see a shop on Furnace Lane. It was definitely gone when I live there. Dave A
