    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Georgie, Here is a run down of what happened to Midland Red: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Red The bus station was demolished to make way for the new Bullring (note the corporate name is one word) Shopping Centre.

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Dolphie, The Midland Red Bus Station, which I referred to as closing some time ago, was almost in the Bull Ring Market, just along from St Martins. (Not much use for it now with no Midland Red.) The Digbeth Coach Station, handling National Express coaches, is/was on the opposite side of the...

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Trouble is, Alf, it had seen better times and was, to use an in expression; no longer fit for purpose - in other words it had degenerated into a dump! BTW, you're not confusing it with the bus station that was in Edgbaston Street, are you? That closed yonks ago with the redevelopment of the...

    Re-use of graves

Isn't this reverting back to the old "Common Grave" policy?

    Razor Blades

Astonian, was it Wilkinson Sword Edge? I think there's a packet of them in my bathroom still somewhere. They were great for paring the old corns as well as giving you a close shave. And, if you left them a bit loose in the razor you could "razor-cut" your hair with 'em as well. You can't do any...

    W T Avery scales

Astonian, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the Soho Tavern, right opposite the main gate. It's difficult to image you've never had a piint (or two or...) in there. ;)

    W T Avery scales

maggie, were you also shown around William Murdock's cottage containing examples of Matthew Boulton silverware and Murdock's prototype gasometer which, I believe, are still on the Avery site? (The latter was utilised as an emergency water reserve during WWII.)

    W T Avery scales

Three of my sisters and my mother worked at Avery's at one time or another. It was one of those tradition places that employed whole families of workers. As with most of our industries, sadly, I believe there is very little left of it now. BTW, just to be pedantic and pick Astonian up on a very...

    Wow

jude, I believe it says the former but I will concede that the latter is probably a more apt description of me, although I've been called worse (usually by my wife). :(
  11. Oisin

    Wow

Yeah, jude, but being behind the bar serving BARmen, is roughly the same as being in the kitchen. So we'll grant you that much freedom. :tussor:
  12. Oisin

    Wow

Marie, glad to hear it, you're a little cracker. :) Beryl, that might be true in general but a true BARman only enjoys the company of other BARmen in the pub. Wherever in the world, he believes wimmin (particularly that BRAlot) should be left at home in the kitchen. :P (My apologies to...
  13. Oisin

    Wow

Marie, don't worry chuck, your husband's the envy of many a man. ;) Beryl, according to the BARmen's code ladies shouldn't be taken to any pub! 8)
  14. Oisin

    Wow

Beryl, but do these men drop their wives off at the pub then pick them up when the meal is ready... I think not!8)
  15. Oisin

    Wow

I'm surprised you post this for that BRAlot to see. You seem like everything a BARman would want in a little woman.;) BTW, I thought a Welsh rarebit was a virgin from Tiger Bay. :P

    Think Tank

Strewth Jen! Your dad must be a good age now. Ask him if he knew a bloke called Jepson. He was my sister's father in law and drove the City of Birmingham. He lived in Niniveh Road/Bacchus Road, Handsworth/Winson Green.

    Wow

Alf, as you're the cook in your house, how come you've got time to check on the rest of them? :P

    Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

Oh, and just found these two of the Vittoria Street party in my archives. It was only yards away from our street but over the border in Smethwick, Staffordshire. Our Jackie Perry would know a few of those faces from HNR and Black Patch Park. ;)
