They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

What a small world we live in Alan, we surely must have crossed paths all those years ago and now in old age still sharing the little stories about when we nippers. I think our parents would have been quietly proud that we hadn't forgotten our roots. Kind regards old friend and keep up the...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I joined the Life Boy's before the war in Aston. The place I went to was at the top of Church Lane near Lichfield Road. There was a gym and a thick rope to the ceiling. Until you could climb that rope you couldn't get a sailor hat, the real reason for joining. Regards, David.

    The cane at school

It's 43 in the shade today, about 110 in the old money, and too hot for gardening so I had a sit down and a bit of a think and come to the following conclusion. If we all formed our own gang way back the Peaky Blinders would have crossed the road when they saw us coming and the Teddy Boys would...

    Sutton Park History

Hello Jean, All these photos are so beautiful I get a bit homesick for times long gone. It's like returning to the footsteps of yore and listening to the crows calling from those huge trees when following the brick wall from the Four Oaks Gate to Blackroot Pool. Kind regards, David.

    Sutton Park History

My memory tells me it was called 'The Forty Bridges' but I can only remember finding thirty odd. Someone once told me the others were off to the right because of the deep mud but I never found them. With reference to the island I once swam across to it with a girl and it was so beautiful I asked...

    The cane at school

I had red hair and got the blame for ninety per-cent of all the troubles outside of school, when outsiders dobbed us in, but this was most unfair because I only caused half of it. I hate an injustice even to this day. Kind regards, David.

    The cane at school

Hey Nico, I wished you had been in my class, we could have shared the load between us and been planning other stuff to keep the heat on. Love your work. Kind regards, David.

    The cane at school

I'm sitting here killing myself laughing at us oldies confessing our sins of the past. What a naughty bunch we must have been and perhaps that's why we all turned out to be such good solid citizens. Looking at what is coming out of some schools today perhaps a few of those older methods weren't...

    Brummie sayings & language

Thanks Jennyanne, just read the article and found it very interesting. I knew most of them but some didn't seem to be from Mom, dad or Granny White so maybe all the sayings were not from Aston. I stand to be corrected though. Kind regards, David.

    Dance halls

Hey cookie if you lived opposite Atkinson's Brewery your place must have backed onto mine in Gladstone Street. Weaver's Coal-yard. Hello neighbour, remember those lovely smells of hops, and HP sauce on a windy day? Regards, David.

    Witton and Aston Barber Shops

What about Mr BEE BEE in Curch Lane Aston up near Paines Cake shop. He had a grey Parrot in a cage. Family secret . When I was a youngster dad got our Charlie to take me to him because my hair was a bit long and didn't want people to think I was a girl. Mom cried for a week at the sight of me...

    The Cane.

I've been having a bit of a think about caning in school and have come to the conclusion that we may have been a little harsh on the deliverers of severe pain, namely the teacher, whosoever they may have been. Make no mistake about it six of the best, on a cold day, was a definite throw back...

Barley Mow Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield.

Hello Jean, I lived in Mere Green after we left Aston. You want to see what they've done to it now. Regards,David.

    The cane at school

Sadly, yes, on a regular basis. Six of the best was the worst because you couldn't do any writing which was still to be completed. We used to put our hands on the pipes, if they were cold, to help take the sting out of our hands. It didn't help much but better than nothing. One teacher even had...

    Atkinsons Brewery

I had my head stuck in a bedstead in the next street (Gladstone) when that land mine went off. Couldn't go down the shelter with a bed attached to my noggin according to Granny White. Bad night, very bad night. Kind regards, David.
