I learnt to drive "helping the milkman", on an electric float the same as the 'Midland Counties' example on show at Wythall. His name was Bill and, to this day I remember the Registration - EOA 937.
Interesting posts. I worked on the line with B33's, Gold Flashes etc in my youth (circa 1952). My friend was son of the (then) Sales Director who had 'procured' an ex "Six Day Trial" B31. He had it restored to original for his Son who had been lending me his Bantam to learn on - and take my...
Hi Pat, seems you were there about the same time. Miss Riley . . . I do remember, she seemed harder on the girls than boys? Mr Baggs was my favourite-probably because he took an interest and once took a few of us to Loughborough College to look at their woodworking classes. Happy days.
Lloyd had some amazing finds relating to 486, probably the most interesting was 'finding' the original chassis plate. There are many stories to tell about this amazing restoration and I hope Lloyd will elaborate at some point.
Many happy hours (didn't think so then!) with my rig, all over the country. they were amazing tools, considering only a 7.7 engine look at some of my loads . . thought nothing of a 40 ton D8 up hill and down dale - at 20 mph!
They were highly capable - pull anything I loved my rig at RAF Lichfield 1955-57 (see pic) and the one in your picture is in safe hands and was recently seen at Wythall
Happy days, I worked in the Transport Dept (see photo of my 'steed') and later, when I got married and Wifey didn't like my week away, became Mr Barber's chauffeur. Much admired a lass in (I think) accounts named Beverley - so much so we named our first child after her.
Good to hear you are a fellow member of the Wythall Museum! I try hard to get there once a year (at least) from my home in North Yorkshire. I have donated quite a few old items to Wythall in the past. Talking about destinations, I began - in 1957 - as a driver with Midland Red and, although...
I must have traversed the 29a from Baldwins Lane to Pheasey - back and forth - many times! As a 'rabid' bus nut in my teens I would wait for hours (non-school days and holidays) at the Baldwin for my 'tamed ' Drivers and Conductress(1) who would let me ride free there and back. Getting the...
Hi Folks, nice posts followed my original, I have more 'snaps some of the Eatonways fleet which may be of interest. My days with them as a driver were in the early 60's - I remember taking a few trips 'over the water' including a trip to the "Le Mans" racetrack. The 'bread-and-butter' day trips...
Mike, What a great shot-might even have been me at the wheel! I may be going senile at my tender 75 year point but IF my memory serves I used to have the Wythall terminus at the Maypole (where the huge Sainbury is now) and return to Acocks Green along Maypole Lane onto Colebrook Road. Looking at...
Yes indeed, This was a 1937 batch of Daimler COG5's and, in 1949,No.978 received the English Electric H28/26R body from No.842 , it served well until 1960 when it was withdrawn and, I assume, then sold to this outfit in Cardiff
Hi, Just found the site and the Pic of 4035 - thought I recognised 'the old girl' from my early days with MR! Found my log of training days - wonder if anyone remembers any of these instructors?
