My memories of playing for Handsworth Technical School in 1953 were of horrendously muddy pitches got to by public transport throughout the city. Changing facilities were almost non-existent hence I often returned home with my kit on and mud all over. Nobody would give a second glance, it was...
As a youngster in the 1950s I often went to Manor House lake fishing, but I now regret not having noticed the lovely barn. As kids things like this are not on the radar.
The scenes look like a cross between trees and chimneys and if the originals were hung in a posh gallery I'm sure they would be looked upon as more interesting, and probably fetch a bob or two!
Mike............ Perhaps you could be good enough to explain how I get those thumb nail pictures up on my computer. I click everything in sight but no response. I'm a bit' of a sad case where computers are concerned and all the years I have been with the Forum I have never been able to...
I well remember going through Crewe railway station towards a holiday destination further on. I was amazed at the prolific number of "Namers" I spotted in probably 2mins. It seemed like a day's worth compared with 8hrs in the Tamworth Field.
John M Weoley Castle........Did you sit any Final exams at the end of your time at HTS? I thought probably you would have been there 3yrs if you attended during 1953. I was there from Jan 51 to Dec 53 and sat the 'O' Level exams Nov 53. When the 3rd yr was initiated there was an exam called The...
Born in Birmingham, on marriage lived in Bromsgrove then bought my favourite home in the sticks near Carmarthen. The picture shows the very Welsh small holding complete with the remains of a mill driven by a race . All neighbours spoke Welsh but were more than ready to speak in English to a...
Re: A few pictures of Selly Oak from an old Sunday Mercury nostalgia page from a book
Berniew..................Your post #7 , the photograph looks to me like a water feature situated on the central road reservation in Weoley Hill, just off Witherford Way. This was removed just after WW2...
Re: Birmingham Municipal Bank memorial
When I was at Raddlebarn School at the age of 11yrs in 1947 I was a National Savings monitor and every Monday morning went round all classes to take money and orders for stamps. In all weathers I cycled to the Municipal Bank in Bournbrook to obtain the...
At my home in Selly Oak we had an Anderson shelter and when the family used it our dog always made sure he was with us. One night of severe bombing we went to the shelter and some how the dog was left out. He had the intelligence to walk over a mile to relations at Bournville who had a similar...
Mikejee.. I have had this rather gory photograph from my late father's belongings and I remember him telling me it was of a neighbour who with his terrier killed this abundance of rats. It occurred c1930 in a hen house on the allotments of Fordhouse Lane Stirchly. I believe the man's name was...
Does anyone have a final term school classroom photograph from Bournville Junior School for the year 1954 please? snoker I have looked on your suggested Forum but no luck.
Paul, the barrister, did extremely well during his education. One of those individuals from a very poor background who slogged his way to the top. Hope this helps lead to a satisfactory conclusion. I do know that this man is a barrister!
Do we already have genetically modified tomatoes? I seem to recall that those available today are modified to keep longer before softening.. At home the tomatoes last far longer than those I grow in the garden, they only seem to last a few days while the "shop" ones last many more. Maybe...
