MartinB Just come across your Post of Nov 2014 . I too went to Bournville Infants and Junior school starting in 1940. Then on to Raddlebarn lane at 11yrs followed by Handsworth Tech leaving in Dec 1953. I have posted various details regarding Bournville School with a few photographs ...

    Selly Oak hidden history

While I was attending Raddlebarn School 1948, we had gardening practical on a patch of land near the junction of Oaktree Lane and Raddlebarn lane. This is obviously now built upon. Possibly my worst experience while at the school were swimming lessons at Stirchley Baths .I doubt any heating of...

    Worst car of the 1960's

I agree modern cars are superior to the 1960s etc. In those days there were clutch problems , poor brakes, body work that when poked in a rust spot developed into a hidden 6in corrosion calamity, batteries heavy and after 12mths needed regular recharging etc. One only has to go along any motor...

    Canals of Birmingham

I've looked to see if either of these pictures have been shown before but as the theme is so extensive I obviously haven't done so in detail. Nevertheless here they are!!!The top one is in the Birmingham Basin and the other on the River Severn presumably on the way to join the Worcester Canal...

Oldest group photo of Aston Villa

I bet those players shown in all the pictures could at least score goals unlike today's team who have managed 11 in 21 games in the Premier League!!!!!!

    Fountains.

Not such a grand fountain as those above but nevertheless a public one. This ,as many others, does not now exist. It was situated in the central reservation of Weoley Hill north of the intersection with Witherford Way. I can just about recall this during and a little after WW2. The water...

    The chimney sweep

Soot from our house chimneys was saved to line the spade hole made for planting potatoes. This acted as a deterrent to slug attack.

    Guy Fawkes Night.....Memories

A bonfire memory of just 24hrs!! Last evening I went to a bonfire and firework celebration locally. The organisers had wonderful imagination and came up with this realistic structure of Parliament building. It was about 40/50yds long faced with cheap hardboard on top of pallets and painted...

    Our childhood toys

Conkers, Our once very popular childhood natural toys. I cannot believe when I go to the local convenience store, situated on the edge of a large housing estate, that bucketsful of conkers are simply lying on the ground or being smashed on the road by traffic. Children today do not even give a...

Mike Freer.... Yes I do remember Pat Daniels. She was working in the met Lab while I was in Charge. David Stratford a member of the lab was idlely tapping a 2lb hammer on a work bench and suggested as an off hand remark for her to put her hand under the hammer. This she did resulting in a...

    The Birmid

Mike Freer....... Have you by any chance read my long article on Bimetals on Post 14? You will surely be able to recall many of the moments to which I relate. and correct some no doubt. When I finished my time at the company I was in charge of Process Control with Charlie Higgs as a colleague...

    The Birmid

So pleased to see Charlie Higgs. Such a loveable rogue and I like to think a good friend of mine. He was the one to organise stag parties and somehow get magistrates' approval for extensions to drinking time. He often borrowed small amounts of money at the middle of the week . I did get paid...
