Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

Those golf ball interiors were a fascination to me. I remember sitting in front of the fire place and decided to cut into the ball. To my surprise there was a rush of white liquid which went straight into the wooden carving of the mantelpiece. This was stubborn to remove and remained on view...

    Measurements

When metric measurements were first used in the building industry to my cost I found that plaster board was imperial 8ft long and metric 120cm wide. I had secured battens around a room at centres to suit 48in width only to find that the 120cm width did not match being just over 47in. I was...

    Cadbury's Bournville Factory

Re: Cadbury's Bourneville Viv. I believe women were taken seriously even to the point of having, girls' grounds (small park), swimming baths , separate cloakrooms, separate entrances to "the chocolate shop" and I'm sure many more. Women were though as highly respected as men.

    Cadbury's Bournville Factory

Re: Cadbury's Bourneville These are a bronze and silver medal my grandfather won taking part in one of many activities provided by Cadbury's. I believe these were won during competitions in the marvellous building overlooking the playing field which provided, amongst other activities, a...

    Cadbury's Bournville Factory

Re: Cadbury's Bourneville A photograph taken during c1930 of Dictaphone typists. Compared with today's offices very austere but for the period I suppose up- market. My late mother, Nancy Blackwell, is pictured together with life long friends, Blanche Jackson, Winnie West, Kitty Welsh, Winnie...

    Measurements

Hope this image of the eclipse from Pembroke does not break any rules regarding measurement posts, but if it wasn't for measurements we wouldn't know when and where to look for it.

    Measurements

To refresh the older members of the Forum I have selected three pages from my 1948 Bournville School Maths book. This is what measurements were all about in those days; sent to torment the 11yr olds!! As paper was still scarce we had to fold each page down the centre and use both sides. If...

    Measurements

I can remember ordering a "cube" of timber but never knew what it really was. Then there is the "dwt" pennyweight and Troy ounce used in the precious metals dealerships. All very confusing!!

    Pronunciation

I have a chuckle when the words "aspect" and "aspic" are used by those who use the "long a". I don't hear "arsepect" or "arsepic", as in the case of "castle" and "grass".

Was there a duet of Ann Ziegler and Webster Booth (sp) during the War time years? I seem to remember my mother singing while washing up etc. "We are in love with you my heart and I"

    Cookers

I can remember during War time mother's gas cooker gave up the ghost and thrown out. An uncle sent a two burner gas contraption down from Sheffield to Brum. This was installed on the draining board of the sink and connected to the gas by a thin rubber hose. No oven so no slow roasts for that...

Goffy. Sorry to say my casting never materialised, a flop! In 1953 it seemed we only had one attempt as aluminium appeared to be scarce even though aircraft from the recent war were being broken up in their thousands,.
