WW1 soldiers remembered in Bartley green.

Hi Eric, Contact was made with a relative (Paul has the details) and visited the churchyard. The Bartley Green History GRoup has photos of most of the men which are displayed on Remembrance Sunday at the BG Social Club.

Price, Thomas and Mary Ann (nee Andrews)

Left replying for a couple of days as we had a 'Price' attend our open evening on Tuesday but your name wasn't familiar to him although you are of the same family. If you want to email me here that is OK or you can do so via [email protected] (hope this is permissible).

Was about to respond but note you have visited the churchyard. Your gt grandparents are buried in Plot 49. The Bartley Green History Group are trying to make contact with relatives of those interred asking them to fill in a Consent Form should the Group wish to carry out any future restoration...

    Stonehouse Lane, California / Quinton

Only just come across this thread. We (local history group) don't have a photo of Rose's shop. I remember it well as when we first moved on to Woodgate Valley we used to buy our bread from there. If my memory isn't failing weren't there 2 sides to the shop? The memories of Stonehouse Lane...

Re: Bartley Green-schools-cutler Family We have a photo of Athol Farm (Kirk's) taken I think (without looking through our files) in the 1930s. Thanks Phil for giving an approximate position of the entrance and also your 'scrumping' memories. Done that myself in my youth although this was in...

Forgot to ask Phil, what was your grandmother's name?

    Cromwell Lane, Bartley Green

Local 'folklore' has it that the road was named after Oliver Cromwell who marched through here? Interesting thought though about Crom - well, however it was a spring and not a well.

    Pageant July 1938

The people of Bartley Green were gypsies at this event.

    No 12 BUS ROUTE

We have recently come into possession of a picture taken in 1957 of a no. 12 bus in the city centre. What has us perplexed is the destination board 'Oakworth and Bartley Green'. Can anyone shed a light on where Oakworth could be or was? Many thanks.

    Old Bartley Green Police Station

There was a Police 'Station' at the bottom of Jiggins Lane at one time but these were cottages rather than a station, however I have never come across any photos. It is identified on a map but can't recall offhand what year. Police also lived in houses facing the Cock pub. The reason why mail...

South Birmingham Shops, Pubs and Garages

I have come across 'Brighton Cottages' before in old records but as yet haven't been able to identify them. Could they have been the cottages in later years known as Stableford's cottages; these were in Somerford Road on the corner of Stonehouse Lane but slightly up from the canal?

Re: Bartley Green-schools-cutler Family Hi Jason, Lucy was the daughter of Samuel & Amelia Cutler and they lived in what were known as the Old Buildings in Adams Hill (at the junction with Jiggins Lane). At home in the 1871 census were her parents and siblings Henry aged 13 and Sarah aged 6...

    Nonsuch Farm

Are your sure Norm? If you are referring to Chris's photo of Nonsuch Farm then I believe Chris has it the 'right way' round. Stonehouse Grove lay to the left of the farm, if flipped it would put Stonehouse Grove towards what was Bartley Green Grammar School.

Re: Bartley Green-schools-cutler Family Hello Paul, We welcome all old school photos ;-) Would you be willing to post copy? I'd forgotten the row of shops facing the old school. Someone told us how the butcher chased a would be robber of the post office with a meat cleaver. Wonder if this...

Re: Bartley Green-schools-cutler Family Hi Chris, I have to ask - Rollason - where was the Butcher's shop? We have a note that when the school (Adams Hill) became a Mixed Junior all the older children were sent to Tinkers Farm; a school I attended in the early 50s. Maureen

    Nonsuch Farm

The first map is showing MOTT Farm (Moat Farm) which was situated facing Field Lane in Kitwell/Wood Lane. Looking at this map, the road the farm Paul is asking about would have been down the road facing James Field Coppice leading to Lower Illey. A map of 1973 shows a farm at the bottom of...
