Not exactly Summer Lane but the bit of Brearley St.betweeen there and Newtown Row. The photo.is my granny Beard climbing the greasy pole, there was a £1 note pinned to the top, and my granny won it,what a woman she was...our family's only claim to fame. The occasion was the jubilee of King George...

    Where and When.

Peter, There was a furniture shop,on Park Rd.near to Clifton Rd.,I used to go there to pay a weekly instalment for something we had on the "knock".(£ down... and a change of address). The only other shop I remember there, for certain, was the Horsemeat butcher.

The sayings of our teachers - Can you remember any?

The woodwork teacher at U.T.S.always used to tell us, behave, or my little fox terrier will bite you. His little fox terrier was a big stick which he used with wild abandon, and a very strong right arm.

John, The flat handcart,is part of my earliest memory. In recent years I told my dad about, going up Portland St.sat on a flat cart that was carrying our bits of furniture,he said I was too young to remember it, even though I told him who was pushing it.So,I then asked why was it it was...

    Christ Church New Street

They look like the three wheeled carriages, that were used a lot, although, these seem to be made of wood, the ones I remember were basket. We used to hire them from Parliment St in Aston. And that is a great photo.Mike.

    upper thomas street school

Thanks for that Mike.As an ex U.T.S.boy (1941-1951),I found this write up a fair description, although they failed to mention George Canning who became lord mayor of Birmingham, and his younger brother who played for Aston Villa. Other omissions were,Ken Williams (not the swimmer),who should have...

Can anyone date this photograph please

Fashion was often copied from the royals ,the jacket is a norfolk jacket made popular by George V.( THE SAILOR KING),now add the very distinctive collar (sailor style) and it would point to 1910,when George V came to the throne. Humph,What year was your dad born? that might be another clue...

Can anyone date this photograph please

The photo.appears to be cropped Humph. Is the photographer's studio named on it,if so, it may be dated from when the studio was in business. Failing that, the lads attire seems to be Edwardian,so what you thought, would be close.1906-08.

Thats That Done With Then !

All aid from the U.S.to Britain ended the day the war ended,so that America could send aid to Germany. We, apparently only had a stockpile of food for ten days,so our foreign secretary, had to go too America and beg. We only finished of our war loans to The U.S.A.about 3 years ago,the only...

    Where and When.

Peter, After further study of your photo,as the arms of the lampost are in line with the tramlines ,it must have been taken on the flat bit of Park Rd.between Clifton Rd and Albert Rd.My perch on that day would put me less than a hundred yards out of shot.

    Where and When.

Sorry Peter,I have my sensible head on now.I didn't realise this was a personel photo.if this is your parents photo.and given their address,it must have been taken where you say,Park Rd.What's puzzling me now is,I was sure the princesses where with them, perhaps they were in a following car,I'm...

    Where and When.

    Where and When.

I remember them driving up Park Rd.from Aston Cross during the war.I climbed up Ansells high wall, the corner of Park Rd.and Portland St.so as to have a good view.It could be they were going to have a look at Queens Rd.which was flattened by a parachute bomb.
