I am remiss in not replying before about this interesting post. I was born there in 1946 and 44 Lordswood Road is given as the place.

    Frankfort street, Hockley

Thanks brummy-lad, It was number 4 it's where my Dad was born. The numbering may well have changed over the years. I've just found an earlier post (an answer to me as part of another question -I had a moment of recall, which has made my day!!!!!) which may answer it. Thanks Dave

    Prefabs

That's it!!! Brilliant photo!!! My Mother always said that the prefab was American QED!!! The only change that came with time was the fitting of a fire escape in the back bedroom in the late 1950's. And yes it was cardboard eventually it was externally painted with a thick paint. Yes there was...

    Prefabs

We lived in the type that was erected in Beeches Road (just down from the Nursery) and in Trehurst Avenue. I cant recall any locally which had the same design but do remember seeing one of the same or near design at Duxford Airfield. There may have been some in Bristol but that could be a...

    Prefabs

oldMohawk They look like the prefabs on Beeches Road by the allotments and maybe Delhurst etc (?) down to the other side of Hassop Road. Trehurst (and on Beeches by the school) was a different design and they had no fridges. DJRVST

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

Pedrocut- I still have my 1963 issue. A little worn but a source of great comfort -if only for the memories

    Abbey Street Hockley

Kat the" few words" I promised- Memories of Abbey Street. What follows is a cocktail of factual information and memories of Abbey Street in the 40’s and mid 50’s as recalled with my brother. Hopefully despite the mists of time and ageing grey matter it gives a reasonable personal view and I...

    Abbey Street Hockley

Kat -Two images of Abbey Street. They are extracts from a Linen Map I have-its a bit large to scan. Its a 1888 original. Fair amount of detail and it ties in with Mikejee's posts above. I have a few words to add later in the week. Dave

    Abbey Street Hockley

Kat I have a reasonably detail map of the late 1800's but its an old Council Engineers Plan on Linen backing. It covers some of the area you mention. Its quite large and I can't copy it but might be able to pick out detail. I think it even shows some post box positions. I'll need to wade...

    Service Numbers

Thanks to pjmburns and Maurice. I have now cleared it up from some new family information. I recognize number changes are "usual" but value your thoughts and advice for future posts. Thanks DJRVST

    Service Numbers

I presume the Casualty Lists published weekly show Service Numbers against each entry and not another number e.g. casualty. Is this so? I have a record of an individual who looks like a relative (my uncle) but the Casualty List service number (five digits) does not match the two Medal Card...

    Family Graves Rights And Responsibilities.

Rosie Thanks. I emailed Handsworth a few months ago and followed up with reminders. Perhaps extended patience is the way. I'll leave a few more weeks!!! Dave

    Family Graves Rights And Responsibilities.

Can anyone give me some advice please. We have a number of old family graves in different Birmingham Cemeteries. Is there a method of advising the cemetery authority of your interest in the grave? I understand that there may be a need to cover old graves and reuse the areas (as deeds expire and...

    Abbey Street Hockley

The Abbey Street Blacksmith shod amongst others Clydesdales and Shires from the railway yard. He also kept a pig (or pigs) and a donkey. As you can guess the horses were used to pull wagons of goods for distribution from the railway. This happened certainly in the late 30's and early/mid 40's. Dave
