The new block was there in the 40s when I was there. Looking at the layout, I guess as we were small then and where the tower is, tucked in the middle, we wouldn’t have noticed it

Handsworth Grammar School 1950--1960 and beyond

I joined the navel CCF and remember the trip to Portsmouth, a great few days. My plan for National Service was the airforce, I loved jet planes then. However, National Service was ended 18 months before I would have been due. I remember once in CCF there had been a threat of IRA issues and all...

    Lichfield Street, Birmingham

That's right. My Great Great Grandparents lived at number 42 (1851 census) My grandfather committed suicide in Dec 1853 and the inquest was held at the Green Dragon. The 1851 census gives number 42 as a name which looks like Eliza Hackney? victulualler. My GGParents were dyers and their place...

Handsworth Grammar School 1950--1960 and beyond

You must have been there when I was there Robin. The name Robin rings a bell. Sadly having been a teacher for many years my memory got into the habit of dumping names and so I can’t remember the names of many people I was at school with. It is unusual that Robin rings a bell as convention was...

Picture 2 shows on the far left 30 and 28 then to opening to the Barracks, then 26 where I lived, then 24 , Rudhalls shop as was, ( my family and the Rudhalls had left when this picture was taken). The Barracks were...

    If Handsworth was a Postcard...

It is probably about 55 years since I walked along Villa Road and the Lozells Road. I did it today with Joceline Glai. near where I once lived; near where my Past family lived; where my dad drove the 70 and 72 buses. Wow! It was amazing. I recognised everywhere - where it still is and where it...

    Guildford Street Lozells

I have pointed out this before, in a sense these were in Geach Street or close to it but they are photographs of houses in "The Barracks" - a court behind 26 Guildford Street. The first photo, 32, is a row of houses in the court whose back walls ran along Geach Street. See photo of Geach Street...
