Thanks Chris, i thought that that might be the case, I had a friend that worked at IMI in the 80's & visited a couple of times - huuuuge! Lisa Moderator comment: Lisa provides some interesting information about Alice Myers. To do the subject justice and to avoid this thread going too far...

What a find of a film. Where did you find it? My great great Aunt Alice Myers was an Overlooker on Munitions at the works in 1901. I wonder if her face is in the crowd somewhere. PS I shall be scouring it slowly I can see to see if I can see her PPS does anyone know what records might exist for...

There was also Midlands Works on Common Lane. You could walk between Saltley Gate & Midlands Works down the canal. My parents, friends parents & many ex colleagues also worked at the met in the late 50's & early 60's they were all draughtsman & tracers. Although my Dad did his apprenticeship...

John Harris, Coin Dealer in Birmingham 1861

That would be brilliant if possible & exists. It's such a niche market that even if not related might well have information. We have one other known lot if Harris's that were glass dealers (fancy) in Birmingham & coins etc in London before but I can't find a link at the moment to that branch...

John Harris, Coin Dealer in Birmingham 1861

Benjamin sadly died very young in jan 1875. His wife & children till they grew, lived the rest of her life with her mother also widowed who lived to the grand age of 101. So it's a tiny window I have from the 1861 marriage till he dies I know. It wouldn't surprise me if he came up from London...

John Harris, Coin Dealer in Birmingham 1861

Thank you, I'll have a mooch at that too. I also found a Benjamin Harris of the right age as a "visitor" in Woodcock Street. Right occupation but no parents he also has a Sarah with him 2 years younger (wrong age for future wife & I also already have her on 1861 census with her mother)...

Thank you, I tried to post from my iphone & it obviously failed! but you got the gist of it anyway :-) I did find the Church Street census in the end last night (I had been looking in St Philips & of course its in St Pauls duh). I also couldn't see other names that have family connections...

John Harris, Coin Dealer in Birmingham 1861

PS Just reflecting on my post just now (which I can't actually see so maybe it didn't post correct?) about me saying it's doesn't say deceased on the marriage cert. I know that the wife's father Charles Cameron was absolutely deceased (died in 1847) & it doesn't say deceased against him either...

John Harris, Coin Dealer in Birmingham 1861

I have a father on a marriage cert John Harris as a Coin Dealer in 1861. The grooms address is Church Street (by victoria square) which I imagine may be a great location for a coin dealers, jewellers etc. The son Benjamin Harris is a Gold Beater. So assuming a jewellers for example would...

Where would you go to school if you were 16 in 1871??? Jones

Hi, That's a nice story & was exactly true for the rest of my ggg grandfathers family. When my greatgran was a little girl & still when my nan was a little girl, the family used to do just that, the whole family played & a lot of the instruments were on loan from the Salvation Army. But the...

Where would you go to school if you were 16 in 1871??? Jones

Thanks for your help all, I thought he might have even been midlands institute cause they 1st opened a "music department" in 1859, which became the conservatoire, but it's still a bit close on dates but would give the same census results of still being a scholar in the subsequent census. I had...
