can you place any forum issues in here after the rebuild

My own view is a bit old-fashioned even though I'm aware of ad-blocking methods. I think that a website like this one should be, at the very least, just about acceptable to view to anyone who is a member or who stumbles across it while searching the internet. And, who, for whatever reason -...

can you place any forum issues in here after the rebuild

The trouble with these Humix pop-up videos is that they are appearing adjacent to people's posts and appear to be attachments inserted by the poster. There is little or nothing to indicate that they ARE adverts. It took me a moment or two yesterday to understand why on earth Astoness had made...

    Is this family

There seems to me to be the slightest suspicion of a ring on the correct finger in the AI adjusted image - but not in the original (which is worrying!). Also in the new image there is remarkable similarity between the nose/mouth area for both individuals which confirms the assumption of a close...

    Is this family

Nice photograph, thanks for posting it and welcome to the Forum! Shouts Edwardian to me, or a little into the Great War. The boy is wearing knickerbockers, a fashion which started in the second half of the 19th century and lasted well into the 20th. The lady may or may not be wearing something...

Seventy-five Years Ago Today....(and eventually Eighty!)

(Reposted, as it looks as though yesterday's attempt has been permanently lost due to Forum technical problems). This is another year of significant anniversaries, life having trundled on for a further five years. Now it's all 80 years ago! Since last posting in this thread and over the last...

You are probably aware anyway, Warren, but most of today's stuff seems to have disappeared. Chris

Not sure how we came to go with XENFORO in the first place - perhaps we inherited it. But don't we have to assume we are stuck with it? Presumably transferring everything to a new platform would be a horrendous job. Chris.

I really think that we as members should always concentrate on the "proper" site, rather than on Warren's test site. The latter is obviously useful to Warren and it can be used for him to try out ideas there and possibly ask for our views on them. I can see confusion in the future otherwise...

    Home Guard

Jaffa, thanks for your kind words. One or two points arising from your various comments. Unless he entered Home Guard service directly into anti-aircraft duties, your father would very probably have served initially in 23rd Warwickshire (Birmingham) Battalion Home Guard whose territory was...

    Home Guard

Very interesting information, thanks, Jaffa. The November 1944 Orders of Battle for the Home Guard show that the 105 Warwickshire Home Guard battery was one of six in the Warwickshire area excluding Birmingham, all making up 26 Anti-Aircraft Regiment Home Guard. There were a further six within...

    Home Guard

This discussion about Home Guard weaponry reminds me that I was surrounded by objects of death and destruction such as these for about five years of my childhood, growing up in a Home Guard family - revolvers, rifles, grenades and other ammunition. I wrote a memoir about it many years ago...

The Home Guard - Geoffrey Bennett and the 39th Warwickshire (Birmingham) Battalion

I've moved the more recent posts on this thread (on HG weaponry) to the main Home Guard thread: https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/home-guard.23811/. I think that is the more appropriate thread for them - more likely to be picked up there in future and also it keeps this...

The Home Guard - Geoffrey Bennett and the 39th Warwickshire (Birmingham) Battalion

I imagine that the answer to Pedrocut's question about protocols at the time is that it was simple in the extreme. It certainly was for me. As has already been stated, a straightforward rule: "Never EVER point a firearm in the direction of someone, however absolutely certain you are that it is...

    IN OUR GARDEN 2024

When you finally get around to tidying up your garage because you've lost something, it's quite surprising what you find. The blighter on the top shelf of the cupboard who pinched some of the peanuts intended for the blue tits was at least tidy. Unlike his mates on the bottom shelf who...

    Deciphering Name On Census Record

A male maker is someone who makes travelling bags. Intensive research tells me that the term comes from Royal Mail and their post bags. So presumably “Weaver’s ……..” (A valuable bit of information we should all tuck away for future use.) Chris

Apparent random problem with the forum

It would be good news indeed if we knew for certain that the problem was with "them" rather than with "us". We still don't really know why the majority of members using Chrome (including me) never had the slightest difficulty and why, therefore, it should have affected only those members who...

    Birmingham Newspapers 1939-1945

That was a happier outcome than the one later in the month when the City of Benares was sunk with the loss of many lives including those of children. At around that time, an American friend of my father offered my sister and me a safe haven in the USA for the duration. I wasn't aware at the...
