Birmingham City Hospital officially closed Nov 2024

Hi All,
I have a whole of images to share from the city site.
Will begin with the nurses home.
The original photo file sizes are too large to upload. The attached images have been downsized.

The other nurses home, on the opposite side.

hi zero and welcome...what can i say? these images are invaluable..... i take it the contents of the old nursing home were just left after it was abandoned leaving everything inside ? just look at the old packets of washing powders ..cant thank you enough for sharing and look forward to anymore that you have...great job but sadly the end of an era

Hi Lyn,
Thank you!
Yes the both the nurses homes were left as in the photo's. They've been derelict for years. I work at the trust, so I had the luxury of walking around the site, with security, when it was closed off to the public. It's a pity I can't upload the original photo's, file size too large, they came out sooo nice.

I'll continue uploading, I literally covered the entire site.

Thank you.
I was told by a colleague, who's been working at the trust for over 50 Years! That it was all Oak. The quality was amazing.

These photo's are saddening.... the remnants of the archway of tears

Outside of the main city block.

More from the outside

I'll continue with some of the other buildings onsite shortly....

please dont worry as we can click on the photos and they enlarge...the archway of tears photos are so very sad to see..i know that most of us on this forum was hoping it could have been saved as a lasting memorial to those who went through it and those that did not come out alive..its part of our history and should have been preserved...sorry to rant...i will now go and look at the rest of them..

I thought those rooms with the wooden panels were great too!
I hope the oak will be reused in other ways, I imagine it's worth some money.

Agree with you 100%. There were plans to put it on show at MMUH, not sure where, but never happened.
At MMUH there is section where you can view some of the old artefacts. They've still got the bells from the workhouse. They were dated late 1800's. Will upload pics if I find them.

It's very sad to see such a historical piece of Birmingham just vanish, for a housing estate.

The first block where A&E is, isn't getting demolished (so they say), it's a listed building. That was opened in 1869 I think. Was hoping they could turn that into a museum, but unfortunately, I think it'll be converted into apartments.

The hospital basement. The corridors connected to the nurses home (my 1st post), Maternity and the bereavement building.

Thanks for posting all these Zero. When you think of all the people each with a different story who have passed through these rooms and buildings ….
If only walls could talk….

[Mark Tooze]

Super photos Zero! Its so much better when you can get "on-site" as it were rather than shooting over fences with a Daily Mail-type lens!

post 69 photo 9 holds memories for me...the entrance to maternity....i have walked out of that door 4 times with my little bundles of joy...hasten to add all at seperate times not in one go

Posted in Zero's later post #76. Let's hope the stained glass memorials (donated by the staff and Friends of the hospital along with the building, etc) and the marble floors/walls of the morgue/chapel are kept/reused. There were also long corridors with terracotta tile flooring. Hope some of those were reclaimed.

Be nice to know where the memorials end up.

We're no longer living in a time where there are unlimited resources, so reclaiming and reusing should, in my opinion, be a condition of redevelopment, particularly ones of this enormous scale.

[Vivienne14]

Just noticed the memorial is dated 1914 - 1919. This must have been either to acknowledge and honour :

- the date the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, thereby marking the official end of WW1, or

- the soldiers who died from wounds or illnesses related to the war after 1918

[Astoness]

viv did you read post 74...zero said some artifacts are on view at the MMUH including the the old workhouse bells...maybe zero could let us know if the public are allowed to view them and how we go about it..would be good to know exactly what has been saved

Thanks Lyn. Here's the extracted details/background/current location of the stained glass from the mortuary/chapel.

* The three 100-year-old stained glass windows from the former mortuary are now on display in the People’s Gallery Level 5 of tthe Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH).

* Created originally by Swaine Bourne & Son (founded in 1868)

* Restored using funding with a £250,000 grant from National Lottery players and The National Lottery Heritage. Specialists, Ark Stained Glass in Droitwich, cleaned the glass, renewed the lead, and repaired broken sections.

* Location: Now permanently installed in the hospital's Level 5 gallery space, continuing to offer peace and reflection to patients, visitors, and staff.

If, like me, you're unfamiliar with the site, here's a map. In post #74, Zero mentions that the (listed - edited, it is not listed but certain protections have been applied) A&E block will remain, it being a listed building. A&E is marked red near Aberdeen Street. Is that the Victorian building ?

[pjmburns]

If you look at the map in post 52 you can see which buildings remain.
However, a search on English Heritage does not show any listed buildings at City Road Hospital.

[Vivienne14]

Thanks Janice. I looked at that plan but couldn't make head nor tail of it. Is there a guide to the colour coding used ?

[Vivienne14]

Agree that none of the buildings have listed status. Must have misread it somewhere. Have edited my post #85.

[pjmburns]

Thanks Janice. I looked at that plan but couldn't make head nor tail of it. Is there a guide to the colour coding used ?

All the colours tell you is what type of housing is being built. Green dots are "bay windows"

As I understand it the part left is the skin centre, eye centre and treatment centre. Which I don't think are old buildings
There are 175 documents with the planning application so I have only looked at what I thought might be relevant.
