Hi there,

I am searching for the marriages, children and or death of several Hall family members of Birmingham. This is in hope of solving a 118 year old mystery of a relative born out of wedlock. The most recent common ancestors are Samuel Hall and Margaret Mary Sheath. It has been extremely challenging to find marriages and deaths for some of their children.

Samuel Hall who married Margaret Mary Sheath, at St Chad, Birmingham, Warwickshire, in 1847.

England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915:

Samuel Hall
m. 1847
Apr-May-Jun
Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Volume 16 Page 429

Samuel Hall was born 1 October 1821 and baptised 8 April 1822 at St Martins, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
Margaret Mary Sheath was born 8 February 1827 and baptised 2 March 1827 at St Philip, Warwickshire, England.

1851 England Census (needs verifying):

Samuel Holl 27 Head (Pawnbroker)
Margaret Holl 26 Wife
Margaret M Holl 3 Daughter
Samuel J Holl 1 Son
Alfred B Holl 2 Months Son
Joseph Holl 22 Visitor
Maria Russell 18 Servant

Living at Pictehett that / Pritchett Street? (cannot read)

1861 England Census has them all together:

Samuel Hall 36 Head (Pawnbroker and Case Maker(?))
Margaret Hall 34 Wife
Margaret Mary Hall 13 Wife
Samuel James Hall 11 Son
Alfred Bernard Hall 10 Son
Emma Elizabeth Hall 8 Daughter
Joseph Austine Hall 6 Son
James George 5 Son
Francis Abraham George 3 Son
Lucy Catherine George 1 Daughter

Living at Richmond Villa(?), Liehfield Road

1871 England Census has them all together:

Samuel Hall 48 Head (Tailor)
Margaret Hall 44 Wife
Mary Hall 23 Daughter
Samuel Hall 21 Son
Alfred Hall 20 Son
Joseph Hall 16 Son
James Hall 14 Son
Frank Hall 13 Son
Lucy Hall 11 Son
Harry Hall 9 Son
Theresa Hall 8 Son
Elizabeth Hall 6 Son
Annie Hall 5 Daughter
William Hall 3 Son
Lydia Ward 19 Servant
Priscilla Meacham 30 Servant

Living at Liehfield Road

For some reason children's names have varied, for example Francis Abraham Sheath Hall is named in the 1861 England Census as Francis Abraham George and 1871 England Census as Frank Hall

1881 England Census (could be him):

Joseph March 65 Head
Francis Hall 23 Visitor (Shop Keeper)
Caroline Parker 42 Housekeeper
Mary Dunn 21 Servant

Staying at Hunton Hill(?), Erdington

Francis in the GRO birth index:

For the birth registration for William Hall, I have written to GRO Index since it is missing from their online searches and they have corrected it, but it is still being updated. It is available for now at FreeBDM, Findmypast and Familysearch Unfortunately there is no mother's maiden name listed at those locations to confirm him.

William Hall
b. 1869 (D Quarter)
Birmingham, Warwickshire
Volume 6d Page 189

However, mentioned in Samuel Hall's probate Will from 9 Nov 1891, William "Septimus" Hall, changed his name to "William Edmund Scott Hall" and became a reverend. I have the information for his marriage and child.

I am assuming that Francis Abraham Sheath Hall, a son, or a brother's son immigrated to Australia and or New Zealand. There is information of some descendants of his father Samuel Hall's siblings who immigrated to Australia.

The main information I am seeking is:

Francis Abraham Sheath Hall (marriage, children, death)
b. 1858
Jan-Feb-Mar (M Quarter)
Birmingham, Warwickshire
Volume 6d Page 180

Henry Benjamin Brentnall Hall (marriage, children, death)
b. 1861
Oct-Nov-Dec
Aston, Warwickshire, England
Volume 6d Page 318

Mary Emma Elizabeth Hall (marriage, children, death)
b. 1864
Jul-Aug-Sep
Aston, Warwickshire, England
Volume 6d Page 308

Emma Elizabeth Hall (marriage, children, death)
b. 1853
Jan-Feb-Mar
Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Volume 6d Page 187

Joseph Augustin (Augustia) Hall (marriage, children, death)
b. 1854
Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume 6d Page 182
Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

This information has been extremely difficult to find. I am wondering if anyone might know anything of the Hall family or have any information which may help. It would be immensely appreciated in trying to solve this 118 year old mystery.

Thank you very much for any time taken in reading this post.

With regard to then1851 census, It is 124 & 125 Pritchett street. It could be Hall, though from the writing cannot be sure. However in the 1849 directories there is a Samuel Hall, pawnbroker, with an establishment at 95 Cecil Street. In the 1855 directory Samuel Hall is at 124 Pritchett Street, and is a photographic case maker & pawnbroker
