As a 14 year old boy in 1954, my first job was with Payne's Shoe Repairs in Winson Green Road, close to the prison. I was a shoe finisher, tidying up the repaired shoes, smoothing off the rough edges of the repairs, painting the edges and bottoms of the shoes. I also had to take to, and fetch, shoes from other branches such as City Road, Rotton Park etc etc.
On occasions I had to bicycle to head office, in Longmoor Street, and later the new offices in Chromer Road. Sometime in the late 1960's H.M.QEEN ELIZABETH 2nd paid a visit to Birmingham and her car travelled along Icknield Street Ladywood. I was fortunate enough to be delivering shoes from or to, our Icknield Street branch and had a very good view of the queen passing by. Does anyone remember the Payne's anniversary grand celebration at The Grand Hotel, on Colemore Row in the city centre. I'd love to hear from you.
