Springfield Area

Yes, the Congregational Chapel appears to have gone in the 1930s.
Note that the Primitive Methodist (and later Christadelphian) Church was located on the corner of Springfield and College Roads.
Sorry marked in wrong spot on map but photo is correct.
I will try and replace map later

The map posted by Janice, post 28 of this thread, shows, bottom right, tram tracks leading off Stratford Road. The were used until 1928 when services to Hall Green were extended and used as short workings until buses replaced the trams in 1937.

Thanks for there amazing photos - and memories! Our first telephone number was SPR3449. In the 40s I lived at 1004 Stratford Road, on Greetman Hill. My bedroom window looked out on the College Arms Bowing Green, which livened up early bedtimes on Summer evenings. My grandparents lived opposite College Road School which is where my father went. The local shops - Holtoms the baker, Kiings greengrocer etc are still sharp in my memory!

On the contrary farmerdave, Springfield was well served for churches. In addition to the more recent church you mention, that is now an unusual curry house ....
The 1903 map in Post #1 shows the Congregational Chapel on the Stratford Road opposite the end of Springfield Road .... later the site of the School Clinic, and now a Primary Care Centre.
On the left in the first photo in Post #1 is a sign announcing the construction of a Primitive Methodist Church on the corner of Springfield Road and College Road .... still standing and now a Christadelphian Church.
Just out of shot on the right of the first photo in Post #1 is St Christopher's Church on the corner of Springfield Road and Woodlands Road. It was built in 1907 and is still standing. Old photo below.

That clinic was where you had to go if you didn't have a dentist. It was indeed dreaded! We took the no.29 bus over to Handsworth where my mother had a dentist she had been with for years, so were spared the horror.

Springfield is a small area that overlaps the boundaries of Sparkhill and Moseley where they meet the River Cole. I don't know if it was ever used in formal postal addresses, but it has had its own Post Office, SPR Telephone Exchange (located in Hall Green), Birmingham Municipal Bank, and cinema.
It seems confusing now, but in the 1921 Census a house in Springfield Road had the following classification ....
Address: Springfield Road, Smethwick, Worcestershire
Ward: Sparkhill
Parliamentary Division: Moseley
Registration District: Kings Norton
Sub Registration District: Acocks Green
Enumeration District: Birmingham
Here's a 1903 map of Springfield, and a few photos.

Good evening all,
My family business H G Turner Ltd Corn and Seed Merchants had a shop 836 Stratford Road Springfield possibly in the photo to my knowledge it operated from early 1920s until l closed the shop and rented out the property.
My Grand Grandfather would have opened the shop he had around 12 branches, it was very close to the pedestrian crossing.
A very interesting area for social history early in the 1920/30s Irish families moved into the area and brought with them strong horticultural skills they all had allotments and we probably sold more seed potatoes in this branch than any other, loose fertilisers, bamboo canes for runner beans etc, some would also keep poultry and they were a very self sufficient community if they have potatoes in the ground and eggs to cook they would be able to feed their family. I worked as a schoolboy in this branch in the late 1960s early 1970s and remember the strong family groups church, home and family. This close knit self sufficient group of Springfield families were a credit to the area.

Springfield became the terminus for the Sparkhill steam tram service on 5 May 1899, when the service was extended down the Stratford Road past the previous terminus at St Johns Road. A depot was built near the College Road junction, just before the River Cole bridge. The service was converted to electric power from 1 January 1907.
The first photo shows a tram at the terminus on the last day of the steam driven service 31 December 1906, and the map shows the camera position.
The second photo shows a steam tram in the depot.
