BANNISTER, Mary and Martha

Great, thank you, Janice. My brother quoted it as "Back 74, Main Street, Aston (actually Sparkbrook)".

By the date of the tragedy, 20th April 1903, the family comprised just the three girls: my mother Elsie aged 3 years and 9 months; a baby, Beatrice, of 11 months; and, in between, Clara, at 2 years and 2 months.

Despite the pressure of coping with three little children, a parent must have somehow been held to blame. Could have been either (it was a Sunday). Whichever it was, how on earth would you ever get over something like that?

Never mentioned by my mother - she may even have had no recollection.

Chris

1887 map of Main Street. Comparing to a much later map which shows houses up to 72 (rest have gone) it looks as if back of 74 was what is marked as Stevenson Place. (I think 74 faces the word "Stevenson")
