Corner of New Street and Cannon Street

Dennis Williams

Gone but not forgotten
Just a quick query....for years I've noticed this funny sign on the impressive corner building at the bottom of Cannon Street.....what looks like the original sign's been replaced now and is simply a blank area.....but I just wondered if this original, almost Masonic looking jobby had any significance to the Building itself, or just a complex shop sign....? Anyone got any info? Cheerrs folks....

The sign looks like AR, for Austin Reed? Austin Reed were at 41 New Street from about 1914.

Before that time it was a Holroyd’s Woolen Warehouse from around 1856.

Here is an earlier view of New Street in 1896, with the corner of Cannon Street on the far right. showing the name of Edward Holroyd & Co, woollen merchant. The shop was on the corner, but with an official address 45 Cannon street.
