Hall & Polley are first mentioned in the 1880 Kellys at 9 Bull Street, having taken over the shop of Joseph Alexandre's Italian warehouse. When they were just at no 9, a milliner is listed as being at no 8 , to the right of the shop, as is shown in the photo They are first described as a trimming warehouse. In the late 1880s they expanded to 8 & 9 Bull Street, in the mid-1890s changed the name to Sydney Polley, trimming warehouse, and in the early 1900s to Polley & Clark, fancy drapers. By 1908 the firm had moved to 66, 70 & 72 Corporation Street and were described as linen drapers and silk mercers..
