Apologies for resurrecting a very old thread, but this is my grandmother and grandfather! As is probably obvious from only a slight reading between the lines, they divorced and my grandfather lived with Carry (as I knew her) who I think had previously been his mistress. My grandmother disputed the amount of the divorce settlement, and essentially spent what he had agreed to give her on unsuccessfully fighting him through the courts for more, eventually representing herself when she ran out of money for legal fees.
This would appear to be just one of the skirmishes in their long fight, though by then she was obviously already reduced to living in the small canal side cottage where she eventually died, about 1975. The in-fighting was so fierce that the key requirement for a reception venue when my parents got married was that it have sufficient entrances so that Granny and Grandpa never had to come face to face. Apparently they did once, very briefly, on the dance floor, but managed to pass each other without incident…
