Parkes Harry

My grandson is the Gt.Gt. grandson of Harry Parkes ( father of Harry the footballer.) Strangely the first evidence I have of him is his marriage. I have been completely unable to find anything else I.e. where they lived who his parents were etc. I would be very grateful if anyone can give me any information. Thank you.

Please would you tell us the info (names, ages etc) that you have from the marriage cert or if possible post a copy of the cert.

Harry's (the foorballer) parents were Henry/Harry Parkes and Ellen Harris. Can't be certain of Henry/Harry's parents, possibly a William George Parkes and a Florence Broadhurst though there is a tree that suggests that that's incorrect.

Hi. Harry born 17.02.1896 married Ellen Harris in 1916. I have searched several sites for a certificate and the only information I can find is a Civil marriage registration Index for 1916-2005 showing their marriage Registration only. I find him again on the 1939 Register living in Exeter Road wih Ellen where he is registered as being a non-ferrous metal worker and an Auxiliary Fireman. There are several trees on Ancestry. Non show his parents. Many are incorrect. He died in 1978 and the death registration confirms I have the correct date of birth. Frustratingly there appear to be several Harry Parkes born around the same time in Birmingham. I have never found evidence of his birth or a baptism on any of the researach sites I use. His Granddaughter is still alive and sadly remembers very little of him. I will pop onto FMP and see what I have on th 1921 register I am grateful for your help. This has been a real brickwall.

In 1921 they are living at 73 Abbey Road.

To go further you'll probably have to purchase the marriage certificate of Henry and Ellen. A simple enough process...

Thank you. Yes it is something I need to do. Is the 1921 info you have from FMP. I have just checked what I have on 1921 and I have him
in in North Road, Bournebrook, again as I have very little to go on I decided that as they had a baby Harry also listed on there he was 4 months old and he was born in 1920, I have made the assumption that this info is correct but I obviously will go through it again.

Yes, that's from findmpast.

Harry (footballer) was born Henry Arthur Parkes in Erdington and I assume the Abbey Road is the one in Erdington. On the 1921 census he would have been nearly 18 months old.

My maiden name was Parkes. My Grandpa, Edgar Ernest Parkes (lived in Kings Heath nr Highbury Park) always said Harry Parkes was a cousin. (we talked about it in the 1960s as I knew of the boots shop). I think Grandpa must have meant he was a cousin of HP Dad, Henry Parkes who married Ellen Harris. My Grandpa was born 1898 and his Dad was Walter-Henry Parkes, so Walter H could have had a brother who then had Henry…Grandpa would have been 4 yrs younger than Henry Parkes. That would fit. Might be of interest.

There are some more posts about Harry Parkes on the "Aston Villa History" thread (posts #150 - #155 apply). Harry's parents living in Abbey Road (as mentioned in post #8 above) would have tied in with his attending Slade Road school too and this is also mentioned on that thread.
