Administration Team
venue and date still TBC

but looking at the last Saturday in July if i can arrange it.

looking at probably the bull price st/loveday st (if anyone knows this place and knows the owners feel free to contact them and keep me in the loop)

This wil lbe everyones chance to say goodbye to Dad and celebrate his life. I have never been to one of these meets so it will be nice to finally put faces to names at long last.

I hope as many of you as possible are able to come and toast to my Dad

OK so, the venue will be: https://www.thebull-pricestreet.com/

from 12pm on saturday the 28th June , there will just be the bar but i hope as many of you as possible (that want to of course) will join Hillary and myself to toast the old man.

I think Hillary is bringing all of dads books about birmingham and they will be available for purchase or whatever we figure out on the day (im not very good at sorting out social things so expect a Warren in the headlights)

Warren I shall sure you will be the perfect host. Postie will be looking down on you and make sure you are doing things right.

So people please give Postie the wake he deserves.

Hoping to put proper faces to the names.

Susie

Hi Warren, I'm really sorry that I won't be there. Graham is finding things a little difficult at the moment.

I've been rather 'out of the loop' lately so could you remind me where I can send a donation please?

Many thanks,

Penny

Don't get on so much these days - so only just seen this, Sadly am away the weekend - Hope everything goes off OK

I am unable to attend for family reasons - have messaged Warren by PM.
However, there don't seem many positive responses. I am sure it is not because we don't care - more likely we are all older and less keen to venture into a city changed beyond recognition.

Everyone is welcome, there isnt anything organised as such its just turn up grab a beer/wine and toast my Dad.

I believe they do food there but ive never been so I cant say for sure! but i look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it Saturday :)

A somewhat belated (sorry) note to update members about the recent get-together at the Bull in memory of Jim/Postie. As most members will know, Jim owned and was responsible for the Forum for more than 15 years and we all owe him a great debt for having taken it over when it was in serious trouble and in danger of disappearing - and thus, without doubt, for saving it.

It was a small gathering hosted of course by Hilary (Jim's widow) and Warren (his son) and included three of us Moderators, mikejee, Morturn and me. We all raised a glass to Jim, in his memory and in gratitude to him. I'm sure that we all felt that we were doing so on behalf of every member. He left us with a wonderful legacy. It has survived all the competition in a changing world, through a time when it seemed that Facebook was going to carry all before it, and proved itself to be the right platform for collecting and preserving Birmingham history in an accessible, ordered and searchable state – and for everyone having a bit of fun whilst doing it!

Warren expressed his appreciation of all the messages of sympathy which he had received and he reaffirmed his intention of ensuring the continuing existence of the Forum, in honour of his father's memory.

As for all us Moderators, and those who eventually succeed any of us, our aim is to carry on our work of maintaining the Forum as a friendly, courteous, orderly place where all like-minded people can find a safe and happy home in which to pursue and share their love of Birmingham's history. And where the memory of Postie, of his contribution to that history and of the support which he gave us never fades.

Cheers, Jim!

Chris

Thanks Chris for updating us, as many of us who would have liked to attend, were sadly unable to do so. The sentiments expressed are ones I sincerely echo.

As a member of this Forum for 15 years, I truly admired Jim/Postie's determination to keep this site going. Not an easy job by any means. And it's reassuring to know that Warren has expressed a commitment to carrying on Jim's legacy and that BHF will continue.

I look forward to many more years of sharing, uncovering, discussing and reminiscing about Birmingham's rich history !

im currently exploring ways to register the site as a charity a CIC for those interested. this means should anything happen to me there will always be a continuation and we will also qualify for gift aid.

it's a lot of work but I'm drafting up the proposal and mission statement

the site will never end up in commercial hands both Dad and myself were/are contacted every week to sell the site but it's not going to happen.

Warren, I'm sure I speak for all the members when I say how much we appreciate your hard work 'behind the scenes'.

Our history group is in a similar position to this forum with a website which records research of Sutton Coldfield History. We are lucky to have a webmaster (is that what they're called?) who is very knowledgeable like yourself but he has expressed concerns about the future if he should become unable to continue. 40 years of research would disappear and like this forum the site is well used by the general public as well as our members. Even the head archivist at Birmingham has used it on occasions!

I'd really appreciate any pointers or advice, when you have looked into it, as to what to do to ensure the Group's work continues.

Many thanks,

Penny

of course not a problem at all, I'm at the early stages and doing it all myself as we don't have the funds for help, but it seems fairly straight forward.

I'll keep you posted! :)

Penny - The British Library offers, I believe, the opportunity to have websites archived on a reasonably regular basis. Am not up-to-date on the details but my own staffshomeguard.co.uk website (containing a significant amount of data) is on that list, has certainly been archived several times in its then current state and will, I hope, have been properly recorded when its online presence eventually ends. Am unsure about its accessibility after that but it will all certainly be there, somewhere. Am not bothered that no further work will ever be done on it.

As far as keeping a website going after its originator is no longer able to continue, isn’t it simply a question - or a problem - of finding a successor who is willing and fully briefed to be available to pick up the reins and develop the site further as and when needed? It may appear a daunting prospect but let me assure you that, as far as websites effectively containing information inserted by the webmaster are concerned (and without complications like direct inputs from many third parties as in a public forum) you don’t need an advanced degree in I.T. to enable you to do it!
