James and Elizabeth Whiston, 50 Blucher Street

Brummie babby
Hi,
I'm trying to find more information about my 3x great-grandparents, James and Elizabeth Whiston, specifically when James died (I believe it was before 1837). Their 19yo son, Edward, was transported to Van Diemen's Land, Australia in 1841, by which time Elizabeth was a widow with about seven children to look after (at least two other children died in infancy). Edward was my 2 x great-grandfather.

Any information would be wonderful,

thank you

Donna Weston

Aris’s February 1941
Prisoners convicted at the last Worcestershire Epiphany Sessions were removed from the county goal to the Fortitude Hulk at Woolwich, previously to be conveyed to their respective destinations
10 years Edward Whiston and Nathaniel Griffins.

(Van Dieman’s Land was Tasmania)

On the 1841 Census there is an Edward Whiston aged 20, born in Worcestershire with a Newspaper entry in Berrow's Worcester Journal on the topic of crime.
Looks like occupation of match maker and place living may be Rye Market.

There is a death reg. for a James Whiston age 54 in Bham Jun qtr 1839.

On the 1841 census Elizabeth (listed as Wistance) is living on Blucher St with 3 sons - James, Abraham & Reuben.

Her daughter Eliza is on Smallbrook St with Henry & Harriet Hyde. Harriet's maiden name was Whiston, so a relative probably.

On the 1851 census Elizabeth is with Eliza (Reynolds) and her family.

Not sure if it's the same house but in 1851 Elizabeth is still on Blucher St and in 1861 Abraham & his wife are listed on Blucher St.

Though on his marriage he appears to list his father as Thomas.

Reuben moved to Manchester, James to London and the last I can see of Abraham he is also in London living with a nephew (James son of James).

I can't find an original entry for Edward but there are the following listed as originals. Address for all seems to be Blucher Street.

I'm fairly certain they had at least 3 other children all baptised Walsall as Whistance - Thomas 1809, Ann 1811 and Harriet 1812 (mentioned above).

James himself was probably baptised in 1788 also in Walsall and listed as Whistance, son of John & Sarah.

1851 census and house seems to be listed as #6

I think the Abraham aged 22 listed as Reynolds is in fact Abraham Whiston as the age fits.

Definitely not Eliza's husband, who was Matthew Reynolds.

There is another daughter, Elizabeth, baptised Walsall 1815 with abode listed as Bham. So they probably moved from Walsall to Bham between 1812 & 1815.

Can’t find any further info about Edward’s Crime, but the Nathaniel Griffiths mentioned at the Sessions was charged with stealing
a ewe, property of William Wakeman of King's Norton, committed to county goal (25 Nov 1840)
He said he was driven to kill the ewe by distress as he only earned 3s a day, but recently had no work and could not maintain his family. Committed to Worcester Sessions. (10 year sentence and transportation)

Not sure what you mean. Matthew is down as Eliza's husband but Elizabeth seems to be listed as the head of house.

I can't see husband Matthew. I can see Matthew, Eliza's son.

When I first saw it I assumed Abraham was husband but incorrectly listed until I found marriage.

Apologies - I missed the age.

I found a marriage of an Abraham to a Hannah with Father Thomas but it wasn't in Birmingham so I assumed it was incorrect.

I think that's correct, they are in Blucher St in 1861 and have a son Abraham Reuben in 1864. Father and son are in London with a nephew in 1871 (mentioned above).

Yes, I think that's a different Edward Whiston, as by the time of the census, my EW had already been tried and would probably have been on the prison hulk.

Have now found a different marriage to Hannah Pitchford reg Birmingham 1856.
Pitchford matches mmn on birth record for son Abraham Reuben
