Presumably Mr (H ?) Hadley with his daughter (?). It’s claimed that this is on Cuthbert Road. Maybe someone could kindly check please. Everything in the window seems to be meticulously labelled. The building to the right has the look of a post office, but can’t be sure. Viv.

old houses on the evens side of the road still remain but the odds side all gone by the looks of it

My grandad had the corner shop on cuthbert road at the bottom of bellfield road. His name was Thomas hadley and my nan was Gladys. The guy in the photo isn't my grandad at all and they had 2 sons. This is intriguing as I have no idea who this Hadley is at all. I did think perhaps it was new owners but the signage says H.Hadley.

hi jacqui and welcome...it could be that the sign showing the name of the owners had not yet been changed..it could even be that the man and girl in the photo are father and daughter just coming out of the shop having been served..do you know what year your thomas hadley had a shop on cuthbert road..as you said the signage says H HADLEY
i think if there was a date to that photo viv would have put it..
also as you can see on the below map no 71 was not on the corner with bellfield road..maybe he had 2 shops

on the 1950 electoral rolls at no 71 cuthbert road there is a henry J hadley and a annie E hadley

i have just had another look at the 1950 electoral rolls for cuthbert st and it looks like a lot of the hadley family lived there..here is the list..maybe jacqui will know who they are

at no 38 is thomas hadley and minnie E hadley....this was on the corner of bellfield road and has now gone..

at no 58 is thomas A hadley and violet hadley....this house is still there

at no 71 is thomas hadley and annie E hadley...this has gone

1962 eroll has a Thomas Hadley with Violet and Brian at 58 Cuthbert Road

Thomas and Gladys address on 1960 eroll is 40 Bellefield Road.
Obviously the signage refers to Henry, quite possibly the sign dates back to the 1930s. Originally a drapers, but changed to chocolates etc by the 1950s. The photo looks late 1940s/ early 1950s to me, so 20+ years later than Henry's time as draper.

Given several family members lived nearby, it's most likely family members kept the shop going, but didn't change the signage.

On 1939 register Henry is listed at 71 but as a jewellery diamond mounter - no mention of a shop at all.
But it is listed as a drapers throughout the Kelly's directories of the 1930s.

Henry is listed on 1945 and 1950 erolls at 71 Cuthbert Road

By 1957 Annie is listed but not Henry

just to confirm that jacqui said that her grandad thomas hadley and nan gladys ran a shop on the corner of bellfield road and cuthbert road...this would have been at no 38 cuthbert st ..on the 39 register at no 38 is arthur bell...his wife and family and arthur is down as a confectioner so this would be a sweet shop..also on the 39 reg as janice has said at no 71 is henry J hadley his wife and children...henry is down as jewellers diamond mounter..no 38 now gone but would have been on this corner

Hi everyone, I've spoken to my dad this evening. He says there were a few Hadleys around but not related. My dad believes my grandad owned the shop in the late 40's, he remembers starting his national service in 1951 and while he was away nan and grandad sold the shop and bought 40 Bellfield road. Perhaps the signage never changed for what ever reason, but,it's a weird and interesting bit of history.

Also as a child we lived in cuthbert road I can't remember the number and forgot to ask my dad. I remember it was up from what people used to call the "cottages" for whatever reason. Mum and dad got married in St cuthberts in 1956, their names are Raymond and Ethel. I went to the school at the top of Bellfield road until I was about 5 and then we moved to Sutton Coldfield. Nan and grandad lived in Bellfield road ,grandad died and nan lived on her own for a while. After a breaking and being attacked in her home she went to live with mum and dad in Cornwall around 1982/3

It was a sweet shop/ haberdashery when grandad gad it.

I have done a Google street search sadly I don't remember anything from the past in cuthbert road! New houses and a school. Bellfield road is still the same but Dudley road has changed so much, thankfully the park is still there that I loved going to.

So everyone... it appears this shop is not the one on the corner of bellfield road. I sent the photo to my dad he said their shop had the door on the corner of cuthbert road and their lounge and kitchen was to the right where the window is on this photo which looked onto bellfield road. This shop must be somewhere else but it wasn't my grandads shop.
