I had some good memories as i grew up there i have since moved away but would like to revisit the area and see how much it has changed
Hi Victoriabbbbbbbbbbb
Hi, I went to Leigh Rd, left in 1960, my name is David Hibbard, my younger brother also went there Bob, any recollection. I remember miss Payne, she loved to give a slap??Just came across this site today. I know it's an old thread but it bought back memories. I went to Leigh Road school in 1957 and remember Mrs Purnell very well. She gave me a slapped backside for snapping my pencil into two. She made me use both halves until I couldn't hold them to teach me to care for equipment. Mr Waldren was my favourite. I think Mr Mullins was the head and Miss Payne his deputy. Such a long time ago. I haven't been down there for many years. I did hear that the name had changed.
Hi, we lived in arley Rd, number 93, can't remember the names, but remember the sweet shop, and also the off licence. My brother Bob, worked there, when he was still at school, late 60s. Do you remember Roger Thomas, lived in chartist road?Hi, my granparents(mr and mrs hicks)along with my aunts & uncles used to live at no 99 bennetts rd. They lived next to the Jeffers Family at no 101. I remember the birch family who lived mid way down Bennetts Road, the Mings who lived at the top and the Morrisons, who lived a few doors away from my grandparents. Does anyone remember Dereks Sweetshop on Membury road? He had a look of Elvis Costello and drove a blue Mini clubman van. I also remember the outdoor at the bottom of bennetts road. We used to nick the corona bottles from the back of the shop and take them back to the shop to get our 10p! I also remember playing alot of football down the Met off arley road. Great times.

Hello, I’m new to this site and I thought I’d ask you if you happen to have any interesting old photos of Thornton Road School. My mum was there in the 1940s war years. She’s 86 now and often recites poems that a wonderful teacher called Mr Dallow taught her. She thought he was the very best teacher she ever had. I’d love to see pictures of the school then or a photo of Mr Dallow to share with her, or memories of him from other members. Where am I best to post this request? Thank you so much! IsabelI have just checked this site out and found it to have some great Photo's of this area today 8) . Dave takes time out to walk around the area taking the photo's - Great for us Ex pats. 8) ÂÂ

I think I may have learned to drive there - did he have a couple of Ford 105E Anglias (which he exchanged for two Morris 1100s about a week before my test, and I had a job adjusting to the completely different feel of the car!)?Birmingham 8
What wonderful memories these postings have stirred.
My uncle Paddy Twittey had a driving school up "the Rock",
Hello mw0njm, 10 months after you post that and I come back to say 'no, I don't remember a TA camp there'! BUT, I do remember the Brookhill. My Grandad (and Nan) were amongst those who contributed regularly to it's sales over the years and it is about the Brookhill in the mid 1950s that I wanted to ask this question. Do you or anyone else remember the bookies runner who would wait outside the outdoor of the Brookhill? We knew him as Mr Dobbin, and I was sent by my Grandad (who liked a flutter) with a piece of paper wrapped around some coins, to see Mr Dobbin, with orders to wait to see that he was alone, and not to go near him if a policeman was about! On the odd occasion I remember being told to go back after the races to see Mr Dobbin again because grandad had won; if grandad lost he was grumpy for the rest of the day, if he won then all the family got some of the winnings. The last time I saw Mr Dobbin was when I was again on my way with the little package of paper wrapped around coins, approached the Brookhill from the shops opposite Southalls, and saw him standing outside the outdoor. Another man approached him from across Alum Rock Road, and Mr Dobbin legged it up towards Sutton Estate with the man in persuit; I never saw Mr Dobbin again.hi. does anyone remember a TA/army camp in alum rock rd just op the brookhill pub. there was a tank parked in the grounds around 1950/60

First love was Kay brelsford .. love the site bringing back some happy memories .
Hi Les, I have only joined this site today and yours was the first to catch my eye as my brother Kenneth Burnett who lived on the Hutton estate at Herrick Road, he attended Leigh Road school. I have a photo of him somewhere actually in the shop, I’ll try to sort it out and perhaps it may be the Kenneth you remember.Hi Billy,
I would have been in an older year at school but I can remember Geraldine Kinsella and her brother Keith.
Keith and I passed our 13 plus exam at the same time and both left Leigh Road to go to Bordesley Green Technical School.
If I remember right they lived Warren Road.
I knew Trevor Onions and his younger brother David. They lived in Malthouse Lane.
Roger Tovey lived in the same road as me, Bennetts Road and was tragically killed in a car crash at the age of about 18. He had an older brother Mick and a younger sister Christine. Another lad who lived by us and who we knocked about with was Paul Grant.
Norma Parsons I believe was in my class in the junior school and I knew a Janet Taylor and a Kenneth Burke (who used to work, part time, at Powells Greengrocers next to the old Washwood Heath Cinema. I think he lived on the Hutton Estate.
I knew a John Bennett, Linda Sidebotham.
There was one of my classmates, I think his surname was Garry Preston who was killed when he was struck by lightning whilst playing cricket on the school playing fields in St Margarets Road, Ward End. He had a mate called Terry Ballinger.
I had a couple of cousins Pat and Phillip Hems who would have been around your age and attended Leigh Road.
I can remember all of those teachers and also Miss Buck in the infant school and Mr Field in the junior school.
If you tell me where abouts you lived I may know other people who lived near you.
Regards
Les
