Blakenhale Junior School

Hi, Alan was in the year above me at Blakenhale I basically knew him because I was on a school trip to Belgium with him in 1962 and he lived in Hadland Road near my second cousins the Farmers. There seems to be two lads who had eye injuries reading through all this thread again. Steven White who you mentioned and Roy Evans. What an awful coincidence.

Malcolm
On that trip to Belgium were Paul Cheshire and Terry Feiding who were both in my class and played in School football team with me, although we played very little during the winter of 62/63. You have would seen me at school, myself and David Corbett would bring all the milk crates out of the snow in 62/63 and lay them out in the foyer in class order for the milk monitors to collect. You would have also have seen me on Friday afternoon delivering stock for Hardingham to each class. Derek Mead, Robert Edwards and David Cashmore I knew in your year.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I can't remember those two lads Paul and Terry but I tended to stay with the lads in my year. I must have seen you at school obviously but particularly because I was one of the milk monitors for Mr Owens class for most of that year. If you are interested I have some photos of the trip somewhere which may have some of your friends on (although it will be after Christmas now before I can dig them out). David Cashmore funnily enough put a roof on my house in Stechford Road just before we moved down here to Portsmouth.

My father, Bill Letts was involved in the Outmoor Road Social Commitee in 1953. they envolved thelocal residents, from Blakenhale Rd and surrounding area. Photos are from the cornation. the school is Blakenhale Junior School. The band that was setting up is the 'Hal Letts' Dance band, of which my dad was the drummer.
I know they put on a number of dances in the school and surrounding area. does anyone remember them? Dad was still playing the drummers at 60 (1980)

Does anyone recognise anybody in the photos?

I remember the dances at “The Blake” ( Blakenhale school ) in the 1950’s / early 60’s, we ysed to sit on the fence at the bottom of Hadland rd listening to the bands playing rock & roll.

I was one of the original pupils at Blakenhale Junior School I'm pretty sure it opened in 1950 prior to that we were taken by coach to a school in Drummond Rd, Bordesley Green. The junior school hall didn't open until some twelve months later. Memories:- Mr Green was caretaker, Mr. Hardingham, head. Teachers included Miss Shellard, Messrs. Garrison, Rome, Permaine.

At that time I lived in Hadland Rd in the summer when the bands played with the hall windows open I had to listen to the music if I wanted to or not. Remember the Tuesday night film shows, I saw The Dam Busters there around 1955.

Hi everyone. Wow, memories. I was born in No4 Hadland Rd in 1952. (No numbers 1&2?? the same as in Homestead Rd.) Great picture of Blakenhale school, baby class as we used to call it. All of the above comments have brought back great memories. Tuesday night pictures at the school, I seem to remember gas lighting? The only film that I can remember watching there was Abbott & Costello Jack and the bean stalk. Frightened the life out of me. Has anyone got any pictures/info/stories etc of Pool Way shops when they were green? corrugated sheds. Pool Way field before it became a park. Also, on Pool way field, the travelling fair that seemed to visit every year. The 2 dead trees just after the start of the field, top of Blakenhale Rd. 2 dead tree was an adventure when I was a kid. Chestnuts Pub when it was a shed, bar, off licence, lounge. If any of you have not visited the area recently, please don't. I live in South Derbyshire now, My rear garden backing on to farm land, after 2 fields we have the national forest. I'm very happy. We have family living around the area where we all grew up. It is heart breaking. The children have nowhere to play. What did we have when we were growing up. Pool way field/park gone, housing. Corn fields gone, industrial site. College Hollyfast Rd, and Outmore Rd, grass verge, we used to roll down that verge. Hours and hours of fun. In those days one hour seemed like 3 hours. College gone, housing. Chestnuts pub gone, housing. I'll look back soon, all stay safe.

Hiya Dave my best buddy or so you told me you were. I remember quite a lot Paul,John,Stev, sorry I mean Dave. Sylvie Hitchens married Arnold Farmer, I seem to remember Julie was always there for my mom. I vaguely remember a lad that lived directly across the road from me strumming a guitar and blowing sorry playing a mouth organ. I remember thinking, that lad is going to go far. I can't believe that it was only from No3 to No25. Oh, what do you think about the mods at No4. I was born there. I often think of our weekend booze ups, Me, you, Doug & Alan. A great night out my round costing me for 4 pints and 10 Park Drive with change out of 10/-, 10 bob 10 shillings, 50p. It would be nice to buy you a drink so if you're free we'll pop down to the Chestnuts. Then we'll walk up Sheldon Heath Rd to the Medway. Then onto Queens Park, through the park and onto the Tree Bells. Then a brisk walk to The Yew Tree pub. Finishing at The Swan Yardley. I want to relive a memory to the full so I am bringing a 10 bob note. Keep safe mate, I'll keep in touch.
