Heathfield Road, Kings Heath

I was walking up Heathfield Road, Kingsheath yesterday and noticed this building. [Screenshot from Google Maps in 2017]. It looks Edwardian? Does anyone know anything about its history? Kellys Directory for 1940 lists 23-31 as TASCOS. Anyone know if this is the building. It swas convderted to flats several years ago after briefly being a bank.heathfield.png

certainly a bank in 2008 and all the shops fronts to the left converted back to house fronts

In 2010 there was a planning application covering 9 to 33 Heathfield Road Approval was granted with retention of the facade of locally listed building.

So it looks as if only the frontage is left.

I am unsure how much of this application went ahead as some properties seem to have been left and not demolished.

Many thanks for information.

To sum up[I think]:
The large attractive building at 23 etc was built about 1910 for
Ten Acres and Stirchley Co-op. Slightly surprised at its size and position so far from the High Street. TASCOS was one of the most successful co-ops with over 50 branches in Birmingham.

In 1940 it was listed as 23-31 Heathfield Road. I wonder if the house at 31 [still there] was the managers house?

As mentioned above it was in 2008 briefly a bank.

In 2010 McCarthy & Stone applied for planning permission to demolish properties at 9-33. Refused thank goodness. I think they then pulled out. Certainly no work was done by them.

The site at 23 was then converted to apartments by the MIA Property Group as Heathfield Court.

The three properties at 23 etc, 31 and 33 make a very attractive group - thank goodness they weren't demolished.

It would be really good if anyone remembers it as a co-op.

just been through a book have all about tascos and the co op...loads of old photos but none showing this one

mike compering your photo with that on post 1 they must have extended the building..bit confusing really

It does say that in 1916 a building of identical design was added. So post 1 shows both sections - double that in Mike's picture.
