Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Just found this lovely Brummie Artist....

Paula Gabb Creative artist proud to be from Birmingham

Paula Gabb is inspired by the beauty of the British countryside for her landscapes – occasionally populated by historic towns and cityscapes, Paula spends her time focusing on her local area with an interest in the history, local landscapes and landmarks around Birmingham and the outlying regions.

Paula has also discovered the enjoyment of painting in abstract art as a form expressing the cityscape, this does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect

Paula is inspired by the impressionism painters, how the artist captured the light of their images without detail but with bold colours, Paula has been inspired by some of the greatest impressionist artists were Edouard Manet, Claude Monet Alfred Sisley, Alfred being her most inspiration from his composition of his landscapes the sense you can walk into the landscape.

Paula Gabb preferred medium is oils on canvas painting with the palette knife she loves the rich layered texture that lends some three-dimensional aspects to the landscapes, cityscapes and the urban environments and reflecting changes in lighting tone. Painting has allowed me to express myself in ways that would otherwise not have been possible due to suffering from Dyslexic/Verbal Dyspraxia.

Comments please...

Not a great photo of this Paul Braddon painting, but one to add to our collection. Not seen this before. It’s listed as “St Paul’s”, but I think that must be wrong. Surely it’s a view of Christ Church, Birmingham ? Or is it in fact St Paul’s, Hockley ?

Yes Viv...you can clearly see the Panorama building in New Street...what became the RSA building...

Very similar outlook of that much loved panorama shot from St Philips, by Samuel Lines circa 1821.....same viewpoint? Brilliant find Viv! xx

Interesting link Pedro, thanks. “One of the greatest, least recognised” it says. I agree. And how prolific.

Viv.

I am trying to workout where that Harborne canal scene would have been painted. My guess is that it would possibly be near Stonehouse Lane in what is now called Old Quarry Park where the Dudley No. 2 Canal emerged from the Lapal Tunnel. That is assuming that St Peter's church would have been visible on the hill in those days before the present houses. The alternative would be near Weoley Castle ruins.

These two paintings by W. Green (active in 1829 - 1850 ) are both labelled as Lozells. The first is Lozells Farm (thankyou Redfern for sharing this painting with us on the Lozells Farm thread).

The second painting is labelled "Six Ways Lozells" It's been debated elsewhere if this second painting is Six Ways Aston, but is it ? I suppose it could be using the reference to Lozells Road. Any ideas ? Could it be the tollgate at Villa Road, Hamstead Road, Heathfield Road Hall Road ? But that only makes 4 roads !! An observation, there's a bridge to the right of the tollgate in the second painting.

Very little seems to be known about this artist, who also painted the tollgate at Villa Road (third painting). So was he local to Lozells ?
