would anyone know why there were so many moms with prams outside the shop..even the police were present maybe they were worried that people would take the new self service system too serious

Not sure but the new Wookworths opened Friday 26th February 1971. Opened by Stan Odgen (of Coronation St fame).
There were lots of cheap offers including some Heinz baby foods at 3p (I have no idea what the normal price would be).

I couldn't find any other reference but, of course, less modern papers are online.
Wonder what the normal price was?
Also possibly only so many at reduced price.
