Thank you. Very much a part of Birmingham life. Presumably he was born in Birmingham ? Viv.

John Smith Parkinson was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Spent many years in Birmingham, he was born in Grantham , his wife in Bristol.
1871 in Hicks st, Aston, a police officer
1881 Ladywood police officer
1891 Heath st,Kings norton Police sergeant
1901 Blackford Rd, Yardley, retired police officer
1911 32 Pargeter road, Bearwood the home of his Son in law George Dalton Dauncey and his wife Annie nee Parkinson.

Another Crimea veteran. I wondered if he was a relation of the Birmingham Boot family (builders etc). Viv.

Perhaps the title to the thread should include the Indian Mutiny. Edit, title amended.

Both of the above gentlemen saw action in the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny. They were members of the Birmingham Military Veteran’s Ass. The campaigns are often mentioned together, and a section set up for them around 1894. In 1914 there were 47 of Birmingham, and 70 in 1911.

Birmingham Daily Post of August 1894 shows that many were being neglected.

Often there was a sad end for those who served, like for this soldier Knighton. This must have been fairly typical if no pension was awarded. Presumably he died in a Birmingham workhouse if it was a Birmingham Coroner. Viv.

He seems to have lived at Cape Hill in later years with his daughter and her family.
