Smartie

I used live at No. 71 Davey Road, next door to my aunt Marjorie Day and cousin Barbara. I had two brothers Trevor and Kevin. Unfortunately, Trevor passed away on May 31st aged 73 but he was friends with quite a few of the boys in Davey Road and Maidstone Road. My name was Sandra Willitts and myself and Barbara went to Canterbury Cross Infants & Juniors and Secondary Modern. The Head Master at the junior school was a Mr Chapman and I remember that the teachers were very strict there. Does anyone remember a Miss Finklestein in the Infants? There was also a Miss Pinches who everyone was frightened of. We used to go the pictures nearly every week at the Odeon and Birchfield at Perry Barr. They used to change the film halfway through the week and there was also a second feature film on. I also used to go the Saturday Morning Pictures at the Odeon. We used to walk everywhere, to the parks in Perry Barr and Aston Park. Also Handsworth Park which was quite a long way. Shopping locally was done in Witton Road and Lozells Road. Sometimes I went with my parents shopping to Soho Road in Handsworth. I was very friendly with girl called Shirley Homer who also lived in Davey Road and wonder if anyone remembers her. Also I used to play with a boy called Malcolm Bates whose sister Doreen was a friend of my cousins. We had many a happy time growing up in the 50's and I used to take neighbours' dogs out with my friend Shirley. I also remember cycling very fast down Normandy Hill and coming off my bike! but you used to just pick yourself up and carry on.
