    Navigation Inn - Wharf Street

Thanks Mike. I've just used this information to look at the 1839 and 1889 maps. I found Wharf Street on the 1839 map just coming off Bridge Street, and can see how that got incorporated into Holliday Street down the side of the Goods Yard.

    Navigation Inn - Wharf Street

Hi I have a query - was part of Holliday Street ever previously called Wharf Street? Whilst researching my Wattis relatives I found two branches of their family in 32 and 33 Wharf Street in the 1887 Electoral Register for St Thomas area. The same two branches of the family, and their neighbours...

Highcroft Hall Highcroft Hospital Aston Union Workhouse Erdington House

My great grandfather is recorded as dying at 18 Union Road (presuming Birmingham due to other research as his address was Barclay Road, Warley Woods). I've been looking for records and am wondering if it was actually the infirmary and the address is just misrecorded? He died of myocardial...

    St Chads Cathedral

I've been researching St Chad's since I discovered a 2xgreat uncle John Douglas Payne who was married to Lucy Wareing, daughter of George Wareing. George was a tailor in New Street, and he died in St Chad's during mass on 24th March 1844 (‘The Late Mr. Wareing, Birmingham’ Sun (London), 28 March...

    Spring Hill

Yes it was posted by me. One of the reasons it took me so long to realise where it was was because it looked like 34, but I realised that the photo was on an angle and when I matched it up with all my family research and photos others have posted of the area, I realised it would be 134 and the 1...

    Spring Hill

Hi I recently visited Springhill to get a sense of the area now. My great grandfather had a watchmakers shop at 134 Springhill around 1920 (photos posted earlier in this feed). I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me locate where on Springhill the shop would have existed if you...

    House numbering system in 19C?

That's really interesting and makes so much sense. I had never considered the reason for odd and even numbering on different sides of the roads before. Thanks mike.

    Doctors

I think this would have been too long ago for anyone to remember but my mum said my 2x grt grandmother used to get a few pence from the doctor to go in and help with births and pop in to look after the Mothers for a couple of weeks afterwards. Her name was Susan English and when she remarried...

How to I find old street maps?

That's really kind, but it was more a general enquiry really because I have a lot to look up as I go along whilst I'm writing up. My family lived in Nechells, Digeth and round Slaney Street up by Snow Hill.
