Robin Bates

Son of Norman Bates, bookie (1926-1989)
and Nanette Scriven (1928-1996). I am researching my Mum's time at The British Children's Home in Davos June 1939 to August 1942. She was sent there, with five other children, by Birmingham Children's Hospital in June 1939, initially for 6 months treatment for respiratory problems. War broke out and the children stayed until 1942. Why were the children made to return home at the height of the war? Who made that decision? They returned on the SS Narkuda, embarking in Gibraltar sailing in a military convoy harried by U-boats. They docked at Greenock and caught the train to New Street. The children were interviewed by Derek McCullough (Uncle Mac) for BBC's Children's Hour, broadcast 27 Oct 1942.
There's an epic story here, which I am trying to uncover.
