Just made me think about growing up in Aston at my Nannas(sorry Kingstanding).
There were 11 or 12 of us. Three tiny bedrooms upstairs no running water or heat. Bathroom was outside. Nanna kept the stove going all of the time, for tea!
But we all [just about] survived!

And today (at least here) solid brass would be a premium of course with a no tarnish coating! I paid a fortune at one of our houses to put real brass kick plates and handles on our front door. Of course there was a double door!
Many Italian families that emigrated like my wife’s parents/grad parents, aunts and uncles all lived in the same neighborhood. In this case NYC. It was a support thing with a common language and common foods etc. the “neighborhoods” built a support system for the new residents. I am sure that...
